How does your garden grow

We got a fairly small bay about a year ago and repotted it and watched it grow we have just moved it to an even bigger pot as it is doing so well.
Finally got the jobs finished today that the sun stopped us from completing yesterday.

Ah, the ol’ powdery mildew!
My courgettes always used to get it. :sleepy:
Now I sink small slender holey pots into the ground near the stem at the same time as planting out and water into that rather than the soil so it gets straight to the roots for optimum uptake (and reduces splashback on the leaves). :slightly_smiling_face:

Plant the mint in a pot (it spreads like mad) but its pretty dificult to kill so is a good option. Oregano/marjoram is also pretty bomb proof. Chives are another good option.
Basil can be fernickety. It likes to be damp but not wet and is easy to overwater. We usually grow it in pots as it makes it easier to look after when grown from seed.
Any kind of beans are pretty bomb proof (just watch out for slugs when theyr small). French or runner beans are probubly easiest.
Lettice and other types of salad if you can grow it in a bed or cold frame is also very low maintenance but can bolt if it gets too hot or dry (that ones in the lap of the gods sadly)
Perpetual spinach (a type of leaf beet, like chard) is really easy to grow and keeps going for ages. Chard is also cracking and very tasty.

I’m taking some notes so that I’ll be prepared when spring comes around :memo:

I like the sound of that :joy::+1:

Onion sets are also good if you have the space.

The slugs were not bothered by the size of our Runner beans large or small made no difference they loved em and the leaves and the stems.

Wow, you guys have vicious slugs. Usually once ours hit a decent size theyre fine

We have actually watched them making a beeline across the lawn to the beans.

We put down broken shards of eggshells to discourage slugs (replenished every few days depending how many eggs we’ve eaten :slightly_smiling_face:). That seems to work for us. Yours do sound particularly tenacious though. :slightly_smiling_face:

Honestly we have removed so many slugs that it is beyond a joke and we still find a few more every evening, they just will not give up .I think I will be glad to see the back of the beans.

Yuk, I found a massive slug today in my raised beds, was disgusting. I’ve been annoyed recently by caterpillars on my Brussels sprouts. I was going out every day and picking off at least 20, the leaves look awful but they seem to be growing now.

Slugs are the worst and catepillars aren’t great either if they are eating your stuff.

I have a million grasshoppers that jump ahead of me as I walk through my garden and chirp away to each other. They are meant to be really bad for gardens too but mine don’t seem to be doing any harm and are really quite cute.

More slugs yesterday evening and low and behold another 5 this morning ,I am of the strong belief that our garden has become the slug capital of the UK.

Inundated with cucumbers, just picked one thicker than my wrist. Not sure what we’re going to do with them all. Quick pickle maybe?

If you come up with any ideas @Green_Eyed_Girl, I’d love to know! I have 4 cucumbers in my fridge at the moment that are huge. More to pick too. Had my first few tomatoes this week, bit behind on last year.
