I feel really stupid about posting this but I feel paranoid about the media scare around Phthalates and sex toys. I'm pretty new to sex toys and have only been using them for a few months now. I own a Lovehoney basic 6 inch suction cup dildo and a g-spot stimulator. The description both states they are latex and phthalate free but I can't help but feel paranoid about the chemicals and therefore I don't feel like using them. I am a little OCD about things like this so I apologise. Whenever I do use them I always thoroughly clean them with soapy water and store them separately. I don't share them with partners either, my own use.

Thank you Scorpius12 - I have only purchased from LH too and have also contacted them with regards to my products and they said they're completely safe to use. I just panic unecessarily at times! xxx
I'm the same about phthalates and try to limit my exposure / contact with them...not only with my sex toys but in every day life! As long as the toy is phthalate free then there is no need to worry about them. If you continue to worry though, then why not switch to completely body safe materials such as silicone, glass, metal, wood, ceramic? ABS plastic is also phthalate free and very safe to use. :) x
Hey SophieM, I have the Love Honey basics 6 inch suction cup dildo (£9.99) which is a skin safe PVC material and phthalate and latex free. I think its a mind over matter thing for me! x
Hi Rose, no need to feel silly or shy! When I first joined the forum I felt like I was asking terribly silly questions too but eeryone here is so nice!
And the LH tech team are always there to help, as you probably well know. They are a great if smartypants bunch lol. If it's purely mind over matter like you say, why not invest a good silicone dildo like Tantus or a glass dildo or a vibe like the Lelo Mia 2? You can then compare the difference to your other toys. I'm afraid that most completely body-friendly toys do come with a hefty price tag - but LH do have great deals and 10% birthday discount so you can always catch a bargain if you're vigilant! I only buy toys made from body safe materials such as silcone, glass, and plastic. I'm yet to try metal, ceramic or wood, but I wouldn't settle for anything less now. x
The PVC won't contain any phthalates, however the only thing about PVC that I don't like is that it's slightly pourous, which bascially means that it can - but not always - soak up dirt and bacteria. Unfortunately it can be the same with a lot of materials. I have a PVC vibrator and two skin safe rubber vibes as well, but they don't get used now because I found out they can be pourous. With silicone amongst other materials HE and I mentioned there's no risk of this which is why I much prefer them. :) Silicone may need a lot of lube used with it, but I'd much rather that than risk any nasties, haha. x
Ah ok I get you now :) seriously thank you for explaning all this to me its so reassuring! Definitely sticking with silicone products now regardless of prices etc. :) I've only had the PVC material dildo since August but used it quite a few times and always washed it thoroughly. Sorry, I should have explained myself properly in the beginning. And there's no need to thank me but you're very welcome :) It's good that you've done your research prior to buying your first toy(s) though regarding the materials as well as cleaning and storing them, I did as well. I think there's too many people that just jump into buying something that they're going to put inside their bodies without any thought and consideration as to what it is actually made of. I'd much rather pay a higher price for something that I know is body safe, rather than buy 4 unsafe toys for the same price.

You are not the only one. I am only now buying toys which I know they are safe. Made of silicone, glass, steel, and safe plastic. But Lovehoney does care to make their toys safe. I dont think I saw phthalates in their toy, yet (correct me if I am wrong). So their range of toys is stil good place to start, as they would be safe to use too
Sometimes the toys I buy are more expensive, but they are rechargeable so then it covers itself that I do not have to use battery.
Yes I agree, when I first purchased the dildo I was mostly interested in the price and the size/quality, then when I came across this whole scare about Phthalates and it being a potential cause of cancer I just freaked out and looked up the product description straightaway. Thank heavens both of my toys were phthalate free! Since then I have been super careful about the materials I go for.
What do you think is the safest material to go for?
On dildology there is only one product that has failed to meet standards and contains Phthalates...is that the only product in the industry that is considered harmful?

Dildology is a project that was started by bloggers to help promote safe sex toys and to actually find out what's in them. To find this out they have to buy sex toys and send them off to a lab so that they can be tested properly for what materials / chemicals are in them and how much. Obviously this is costly and they are not sponsored by anyone and rely solely on donations from the public to do this, therefore only a small amount of toys in the industry have curently been tested. x
Not at all. As it is a phthalate free PVC it should not leak any chemicals into your body. The only thing it might do as it can be porous, is transfer bacteria that the toy has 'soaked up', to yourself which can cause irritation and / or a slight infection, but this is only temporary and will not be harmful long-term. If you haven't had any irritation or infections then all is okay. :) x
