I think ‘caught’ can mean both things. As in, ‘I caught them doing something they weren’t supposed to’, and, ‘I caught sight of something that wasn’t necessarily intended for me’.
I would say in most of these examples it’s more the presumption of privacy that’s been intruded upon, rather than the act itself being taboo.
Edit: Better example: ‘I caught that show on the TV last night’.
