Inexcusable when a teacher ignores you. Too many teachers know their subject but are inadequate in their interpersonal skills. My partner taught college for 17 years. His students loved him and would come to him for advice. He kept up on teaching techniques such as POET courses.
I hope your teacher does better in future.
In my experience with uni there were a few very separate types of lecturers. There were some who obviously didn’t want to be there, some who obviously loved their subject and were trying but just not the best at teaching it and lecturers who enjoyed teaching and were good at it.
Unfortunately in my experience the 1st was the most common, though closely followed by the 2nd (it was actually interesting watching 1 lecturer. He was normally so monotone but was obviously trying really hard but when we got onto 1 specific topic he became so much mire animated and it was immediately apparent what his favourite subject was). I’ve even had a few that were just mean/awful in general, supervisors making students cry, supervisors gossiping/bad talking the students behind their backs, being rude about how students are prioritising time (ie not starting a piece non-assessed work with weeks left when there was still assessed work due) and finally just being awful about instructions and disability adjustments.
There’s such a massive range of experiences and it’s sad how much a bad lecturer can ruin a subject for you sometimes.
That is incredible, I hope you get tore in to them… eejits.!!
I had a similar experience a couple of months ago @Goth_Girl, I had a mug delivered from Amazon, when the postman handed it to me the box rattled, I opened it indoors and it was smashed to bits, no protective packaging, I had a right moan and they gave me a replacement.
Very annoying! On the other side of the coin, I ordered a puppy teething bone from Amazon and it arrived in a big box with a ridiculous amount of packaging!
Fingers crossed
, my replacement was very well packaged.
Woke up this morning to a lot of messages on my work’s group chat. They’re in desperate need of staff and people are moaning about it. No one said it but I know the reason they’re in need is because I’m off as I’m testing positive with covid. They’re all my shifts. I have no symptoms but I’m on day 8 of isolation. I figured once day 10 hits I’ll be allowed back to work regardless of what my test says (I’ve done plenty of googling
) but I work in a residential home and, even though our guys aren’t physically vulnerable, the company policy is to wait 14 days.
I hate feeling like I’m p*ssing people off or feeling like I’m causing all the stress. It really eats away at me. On the other hand, my attitude is f them, I never ever have sick days, I always pick up the slack, and I’d be back sooner if I was allowed/it was safe to do so.
I wish I had that attitude all the time but I’m a big worrier and although I care less about what people think of me as I used to, I still do sometimes.
I feel your pain, i rarely have time off, the longest i went was 8 years without a day off sick, then when i actually was ill, they were constantly ringing asking when i would be back…industrial accident that was their fault and my wrist in plaster!
Nowadays in my current job, i have had 2 days off in six years, after a small operation. I know they miss me, on my days off or holidays, but i don’t feel guilty, nor should you. ![]()
@Goth_Girl @WillC - thank you both of you ![]()
It’s a bizarre feeling. I know I shouldn’t be feeling it because I have literally no control over it but it’s still just there, although the more people who have told me I have no reason to stress, the more the weight’s being lifted off my shoulders a little.
@Goth_Girl - it’s crazy how much you can get done when you’re within the same 4 walls! I’ve been really productive and the house couldn’t be cleaner. A colleague told me that if ever you get cabin fever to move some furniture around and change the look of your surroundings a little… I responded with “yep, I’ve put a new bed up and moved wardrobes and drawers already.” That was by day 2. The possibilities are endless ![]()
And I’m impressed @WillC! You’re certainly a hard worker, and definitely have no reason to ever feel guilty if you’re off.
Neither do you, and i know it’s hard to drop the guilt if you’re conscientious. Just take the fact that you’re missed as a compliment and try not to think about work when you’re not there. ![]()
@For_Your_Eyes_Only_x , As people have told you and you know yourself that it is out of your hands . I know a number of people that have been in similar situations . A number of them got a false positive and had to take two weeks away from work , others have not been able to travel or have family get togethers only to find out with later tests they were actually negative . Back when I was working and on scheduled vacation I had my boss call me to try and get me to work the weekend . I was 1,600 miles away , LOL . Wouldn’t it be nice if EVERYONE preformed their job to the best of their ability and the company did not have to lean on the few that actually do ? Try and enjoy your last several days before they harness you to make up for others performance .
@For_Your_Eyes_Only_x
You are absolutely doing the right thing by isolating for the full term. Your work is short-staffed, yes, but your priority is to protect yourself and protect others. Don’t allow them to guilt-trip you. Relax, be kind to yourself, and you will return to work with peace of mind. I wish you all the best in your healing. ![]()
You deserve some time off @For_Your_Eyes_Only_x , even if it is enforced, perhaps now they’ll realise how valuable you are to them, you’re such a nice caring lady ![]()

Thank you for your lovely words @Oldman @tpatch and @Knight1119. All very reassuring and comforting ![]()
I’ve just reread my initial post and I think I’ve made it sound bigheaded of me, as if they need me.
I mean they need a certain amount of staff to reach safe working levels and I’ve totally ballsed that up by being off, and because it’s the weekend they’re really struggling to find a replacement and in turn I feel guilty because I know it’s going to be chaos there.
As the day’s gone on I’ve relaxed a little. Any work stress can be dealt with when I’m back at work, and I’ve muted all notifications relating to work. Out of sight, out of mind.
You’re very welcome @For_Your_Eyes_Only_x ![]()

Don’t undersell yourself, they do need you!
I really feel for you @For_Your_Eyes_Only_x but it may also make them realise how valuable to them when you are able to return. Its not your fault. You are just following the rules.
They will all appreciate you more when you return.
News papers/media
Went into a shop tonight and noticed a headline on the front page of a paper that I refer to as “The scum” a paper I despise with a vengeance, I am sure you can guess which one i’m on about. The story related to Harry and him taking legal action the home office, now rather than print what harry is actually doing and why he is doing it, they made it out as if he was being a whinging “It’s not fair I want this” type of story, filled with inaccuracies and avoidance of actual facts.
Similar to an article I read on a news reporting site recently, a story which was without a single doubt complete bullsh*t and completely untrue.
I know making up stories sells papers ect. it’s just annoying how much rubbish there is out there now and I wanted to rant about it, I did, rant over.
It’s amazing how much stuff can be twisted without technically lying. We did something like that for a uni module, had to write an article based on a random paper. My groups was about how the time of day effects stem cell regeneration and DNA repair (i think if i remember right). We ended up writing a lovely article all about how bad sleep habits caused cancer
Bet you opened a whole can of worms on that one ![]()
