If we think of an interesting question can we put it up here just on it’s own or should we try to think up a round for it?

Edit: I got a bit carried away and did a new set of quiz questions but I realised the cocktail one has only been up a few hours so I’ll wait until tomorrow before posting! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Barry Squirt Wader II :slightly_smiling_face:

(and that is genuinely the best I could do. Anagramamaming Anananagramming Word jumbles are hard.)

And I saw how long that took you to come up with! :joy:

And that’s not including the time I spent working it out with pencil and paper. :slightly_smiling_face:

What are the sex chromosomes of male calico and tortise shell cats?

Summary

Aaaaargh I studied this at uni in my genetics module… it’s either XXY or XYY… actually I don’t think XYY is a thing. Going with XXY. One X expressing one colour, one inactivated X for the other. Hence why females can be torties a lot more commonly.

Summary

You’re right with XXY, though technically they can be any number of Xs (though i don’t think they’ve ever recorded more than like 4). I don’t think 1 of the Xs is properly inactivated in these particular breeds, they are both partially expressed creating the unique colouring patterns. Also nice to know you did genetics stuff at uni, I’ve done a few too :grinning: as you may have guessed i rather like biology and honestly a lot of science in general (and also cats :joy:). You’re right that females are more common for both too, males are rare, infertile and have Klinefelter’s syndrome. And yeah i don’t think it’s possible for any viable XYY babies

Yes I studied Psychology at University and took a module in Behavioural Genetics in my final year. Absolutely loved it. Then worked in genetics research for a year after graduating, assessing the link between various deletion/duplication syndromes and behaviour.

@VanillaWithSprinkles and @MsSubExperimenter I think you’ve both done really well… combining both sets of answers 8/10 - nothing wrong with 80%!!!

Question 4 was set by a friend in a WhatsApp group quiz and took me hours to work out - was not the most productive use of an evening! I promise you’ll bank it for future quizzes though.
