There are always periods when it feels I’m dragging myself to the gym. But, it’s worth it when I get there.
Nothing wrong with taking a break from it. Maybe set yourself a date to tackle it again. Perhaps buy some new gym wear and guilt yourself into going to show it off.

I dream of getting back to a gym , but caring for wife and handling 100% of house chores leaves zero time to actually just go to a gym . I do get a fair amount of exercise working in the garden , yard and wrenching and metal fabrication . Actually my best “workout” is giving myself a prostrate massage while standing with a suction dildo stuck to a vertical surface . Sessions can last from 15 minutes to an hour . If I am extra lucky I sneak in some free weight arm / chest work . Shoulders too shot to swim much and bad hip keeps me from running at all , even much walking . Saddest is bad hip keeps me totally off my bicycle .
@ApolloSwallow I actually made it to the gym yesterday and you’re right. I always feel better afterwards…. ![]()

@Oldman I used to swim thousands of meters when I was training for triathlons, I actually miss swimming. I need to add that back in to my regime. Also, I commend you on your dedication to your wife, that sir is true love and compassion. ![]()

Brilliant, a great start to getting the gym back in your life.
I have always been active and when young did recreational sports and exercised. But now that I am older it is really hard to stay motivated and partly because I can’t do the things I used to be able to do which really messes with your head. I’m 62 and still mentally feel like I’m 20. Over the last five years I have really gotten into indoor rowing and the indoor rowing community. Bought me a concept2 rower during the pandemic and it was a really good investment. Total body workout and takes a lot of mental concentration as much as physical. Great low impact exercise for us old guys.
Wait…there’s times when you’re not in trouble @Tenshadesandme
Not much for the gym these days. I used to go to play pick-up basketball. But I have started working out at home and getting in some miles on the trails. Dtermined this year to drop 10 pounds before summer kicks in.
Need some ideas for core and arms though.
Yep, those moments before my mouth says something it knows it shouldn’t usually ![]()
If you want an arm workout, what about shadowboxing?
And then you just say it anyway! Remind me to teach you my 76 ways to stop before you get spanked methods.
I’m probbaly going to spend some time on a speed bag . I’m jjst looking to firm up up a bit.
Story od my life. I tried to be good but there were much better options ![]()
Got you. A similar technique but with added equipment. I do love a good spar, boxing or otherwise.
How can you say no to better dealing your better judgment…
Good for the Florentine Flogger muscle memory. We do know you LOVE to” spar”
I’m trying to restart my healthy (or healthier) eating after a mental health wobble. I’m still exercising but my diet isn’t as good as it was. The crisps have snuck back in! I’m making progress with the exercise alone and relatively good eating but I think a few tweaks would help.
Does anyone have any cookbook recommendations for healthy but tasty food with natural, unprocessed ingredients (not something that replaces sugar with sweeteners etc)? I need to eat some carbs according to my doctors so can’t do a keto diet.
I don’t need a low calorie diet because I want something that I can actually stick to rather than a quick fix diet which a lot of cookbooks seem to be. I couldn’t cope with 800 calories a day or anything that involves fasting, it’s all just a fad in my opinion which wouldn’t last!
I know it’s a long shot and I’m being quite specific but I thought I’d ask anyway!
I can help what is it you like to eat and is there 95% of the foods I cook and make are by me and from scratch so should be able to help you @Kitty-Cat01
If you want a couple of cook book ideas for this.
Tom kerridge - lose weight and get fit.
This was his recipes that made him loose so much weight.
The muffins are great for after the gym.
Joe wickes- lean in 15.
Some very good recipes that are so tasty and don’t use artificial additives.
Hairy bikers - hairy dieters.
Real meals made healthy so it doesn’t feel like you are on a diet.
Thanks @Long-John-Silver I like most things other than fish / seafood. I like food with lots of flavour from herbs and spices, it’s part of being neurodivergent for me! I can’t stand bland food ![]()
Favourite foods are cheese, eggs, tomatoes, limes/lemons (don’t know why but I’m obsessed with them at the moment!), mushrooms and most other vegetables too except onions which are nasty! (I just swap them for leeks if I need to). That doesn’t really help you much, sorry! I guess I’m looking for the opposite of most people, I’d like something with different flavours even if it’s more time consuming to cook.
Thanks @Bonzo2020 Tom Kerridge might be a good idea. I have the lean in 15 books, I used them when I lost loads of weight so they were good, just need something new because I get bored way too easily! I love the hairy bikers too, I have a few of their books too ![]()
Without peeps talking and chattering, there is no need for a forum of words to exist…
