Had mine done on the NHS about 30 years ago. There was no waiting list problems then, but who knows today?
The only other advice I can give is be patient, don’t rush to get back in the saddle as it were!
I don’t remember any particular problems. I’d recommend it as it takes all those pregnancy worries away and saved my wife having to take the pill for any longer than she wanted to.
Much easier for us boys to have it done than the girls equivalent
Hopefully your outcome will be different than mine. The procedure was almost painless and it is great for the wife not having to take any sort of birth control. But for me the orgasm just don’t seem as good as they were before. For me my balls are always full feeling and it seems that no matter how much sex we have or times I release by myself I just never get that satisfaction. It just feels like less of an orgasm to me. It seems that I got hornier after the procedure, like now I am always looking for the full release that I used to get. Good luck and don’t let me scare you, I just hope others get a better outcome than me.
No you haven’t scared me. I am not too worried about it effecting anything like that. Although there was nothing about that when reading up on possible side effects so appreciate the heads up.
I had mine done on the NHS about 24 years ago. Never looked back! Made me more horny I hate pain. Procedure itself was fine but I had discomfort and walked funny for a few weeks after.
What no one tells you is it’s really uncomfortable to wake up in the night horny with a hard on and not be able to have sex or wank! Had to wait a few weeks if I recall. Seemed a long time at the time!
Dr Amir Khan said on a video the other week that he didgo to the NTA awards as he had a vasectomy clinic next day and some had been waiting 8 months! He is based in Bradford I think.
The OH wants my bollocksed chopped off but I’m not so keen. I know 2 people that have had them done in the past 12 months, waiting lists were a couple of months, but on researching if you pay for private it’s a lot less (typical).
Had this done many moons ago and soooo happy I did. We were done having children for medical reasons. Our two children actively attempted to kill Mrs. Kat and her doctor said no more. Some advice:
You are going to get told to abstain from sex for a period of time. I HIGHLY recomend you follow this advice. I had a good friend blow this off and it resulted in some extreme pain and a trip to the ER for a grapefruit sized ball sack.
It hurt. A lot. Insist on pain killers.
Buy your ice packs now. You will need them even with pain killers.
You will need to produce before and after samples to ensure the procedure was effective. Demand assistance from the appropriate partner. Demand frequent rechecks.
100% agree, I’m in the process of female sterilisation and the end goal is way in the future. Like others have said, it’s dependant on the health board. I know mine have quoted 12 weeks from referral to consultation (for both male/female procedures) with 8 weeks consultation to procedure for men and 18 weeks for women, but the figures aren’t a true reflection, I’m on forums where men have waited closer to 9 months, and women 1 1/2 to 2 years.
Hopefully it comes around quickly for you! And a smooth speedy recovery when it does come round!
I had mine done about 4-5 year ago at my local GP surprisly. The part I found the most uncomfortable was the next day when I had to change the dressing but it is 100% worth to not have to worry about anymore pregnancies. I was quiet tender for a week or two then I just becomes the norm.
My job can be canny physical so I just took it easy obviously. Weirdly it was sitting up and down I found to be the thing that gave me the most unwanted twinges
You will have to give a sperm sample a few weeks after to make sure that it’s worked but was probably the easiest part of it all
I had a vasectomy years ago after we had our 2 kids, we had a consultation and the consultant was great, he was supposed to go through all the, why, are you sure questions but he said as your both hear you obviously know what you want. The operation was painless and over in minutes. I’m a wuss when it comes to stuff like that so had a “moment” but that was me being me. But otherwise it will be one of the best decisions you’ll make as a couple.
Ironically if you know me and where my life is now, a vasectomy wouldn’t have been needed.
I’ve thought about it a number of times and it is something I would like to get done, for the obvious benefits, but am put off / nervous by the experience my best mate had. We are late 30’s / early 40’s now but he got it done in his mid 20’s after 2 kids and had to get it done 3 times, at the time. Some bits were re-attaching, I don’t know the whole detail, but he had to get it redone. Now, 20 years later he gets considerable pain and is trying to find solutions but mentions the same as @DandEfuncpl about his balls always feeling full.
Obviously this is the 1% or so that doesn’t go like it should but with the problems and some others reporting a reduced orgasm it worries me enough to stay away and stick with condoms which would not be the preferred method.
I had my vasectomy 12 years ago. I think the whole process took around 4-5 weeks for chatting to the doctor, 2 weeks later I had a pre op, then 2-3 weeks later I had the procedure. It was a relatively easy recovery too. My balls literally swelled into one bollock but they give you a proper sexy Jock strap to wear to help hold everything in place. It is uncomfortable but not too painful. I was back into work the day after, depending on your job just take it easy.
When the swelling goes down and you can have sex, you still need to use protection, as there can be sperm still lingering around. After 4-6weeks you have a sperm count done. Then you still have to wear protection. Then after 6months you have another sperm count done, to make sure you’re firing blanks, then you should be good to go bareback then.
@Mr.MrsW thank you for the detailed time line of what to expect. That is very helpful.
I have had to give 4 sperm samples in my life so far and found the hospital room wank to be the least sexy experience ever. They didn’t even have a tv with porn on or magazines
I come under the Hywel Dda health board in Wales and I went to my GP in May. I hadn’t heard anything back so rang them today after seeing your post… there is currently a 4 year waiting list and no vasectomies are currently being carried out at all as routine surgery…
I had to ‘produce’ a sample at a private clinic. There was a catalogue of films but I must admit they were terrible! Thankfully I could stream from my phone to the screen in there.
The room itself was labelled the ‘Production Suite’. I don’t know why this name tickled me so much, but it did.
