When i first drove an auto without instruction i tried to use both feet as i would with a manual! ![]()
Now i wouldn’t go back to manual.
Same here. Don’t know why the UK is so hung up on manual when the rest of the world drive auto
I thought i’d get bored not using the gearstick, but it’s actually so much easier, especially in busy traffic!
I would never go back to manual now. My current VW Golf has the fancy cruise control which brakes automatically and keeps a set distance between you and the car infront which is great on the motorway or even around town in traffic, just takes a little getting used to as feels strange putting your trust in the car.
Pretty soon we will all be driving autos as we move to electric vehicles.
Autos where slow to catch on in the UK due to the types of journeys most do and the roads we have, however recently (2005) onwards autos are very efficient and are decent now for all types of driving. I personally would only have a auto in my commuter car as I enjoy manual too much.
I’m 30 and probably has around 20 Cars
I was a private dealer for a bit so would buy, keep for a few months then sell.
Currently have 3, but my main is a 2001 VW golf 1.9 diesel.
I’d love either Rx7 or 1968 Camero (both would need to come with 50k cash in the boot for modifying) ![]()
My favourite is my MX5 fully modified to 230bhp turbocharged track car (when it’s working)
Even as recent as early 2000’s some UK autos have been terrible. I had a brand new Smart Car in 2004 and the auto box would give me whiplash ![]()
The DSG box in my Golf js brilliant, I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that fuel economy is better than the manual too. Highly recommend the DSG box that’s in VW’s, Audi, Skoda etc.
I have a 1992 Lexus auto. 30yrs on, the gear change is still imperceptible. Can’t see me buying electric any time soon. My mate’s Tesla is noisier than mine , so much road noise.
I know what you mean about narrow roads.
Camero, Mustang and “Funny cars” were popular, many were about. Back in the Eighties I had a Sierra with a Cosworth build.
Love Muscle cars but not so much into speed any more.

I drive a Citroen C1!
I would love to update the engine and have myself a sleeper car (car that looks stock but has a kick) ha
3 weeks later and the C-HR has to go. Theres something about the extra electricity inside it / electro-magnets, that’s screwing up my epilepsy. Have been brilliant for last two years and now BHAM! Seizure symptoms every day, had to stop cycling which is a pain, it helped mentally.
Anyone drive a Volvo xc60? Might go for an x-trail.
Peugeot 307. It’s my first car and what I’ve always wanted.
Dream car though would be a Lamborghini or a Audi TT if we’re going crazy or a white Range Rover but that’s still crazy for me ![]()
I have just bought myself a kind of sleeper!
An old 2005 Vauxhall Corsa C with a 1.8 sri engine, nothing that will pull your arms off but she’s good fun!
trying to find a 2.6 v6 Vectra engine to give her a new boost of life though!

A little white Renault Clio x
I’ve driven XC60s and 90s. The gearbox is a little bit slow to react but otherwise they’re lovely cars, if I could afford I’d buy one without a doubt for towing
Ford Kuga, but I think my most fun car was the LR TD5… Love to own a red Mitsubishi barbarian, test drove a 19 plate a short while back and felt great ![]()
Mazda 6 petrol wife has a Fiat 500
I own a 2019 charger scat pack 392. It’s not about miles per gallon it’s smiles per gallon
when gas prices skyrocket I’m quietly crying inside lol. Fastest car I have ever owned.
A 1957 Raleigh with hub dynamo and three speed gears
