Your parents' attitude towards sex

Do you view your parents’ attitude towards sex to be old fashioned?

I do. Mine are against sex before marriage.

They are in their 80’s though.

We are the ‘old’ parents. I think our kids would be shocked
You never think your parents have anything to do with sex…even though they somehow had you:blush:!!

My parents are also in their 80s, I think their attitude is pretty good. My Dad knows I test for Lovehoney, I didn’t know quite how much he knew. A question came up in a quiz recently to which the answer was Okeanus. I didn’t know the answer and was told I absolutely should have known it since Okeanus was Peitho’s father!

…so he clearly knows who I am on the forum!

They’ve never been judgemental, very much of the “people are free to do whatever they want as long as they’re not hurting anyone” mindset. I did get a panicky call from Dad once though saying Mum had found a device in my old room and started using it as a back massager, he thought it was a mains powered wand and didn’t know how to tell her. Thankfully, it wasn’t, it really was a back massager. Made me laugh though.

My parents were born in the early 1930’s. They never, ever talked to us about sex, but they must have been pretty open minded as there were always Playboy and Penthouse magazines in their bedroom in which they never tried to hide. They knew I would sneak them out but never said anything.

My wife grew up in a strict catholic household and sex was never mentioned. She says that is why she was so curious and never had any hangups. She was a virgin when we met and she was a very eager lover and still is, forty years later. LOL.

With my parents attitude to sex I’m surprised my sister and I were ever convinced at all.

My wife and i have made up for that though. I think our kids will be surprised when they eventually have to clear out our toy box, drawers and wardrobe.

My parents basically never said anything positive about it. Sex was to have kids, and only within marriage, and only hetero. It was pretty traumatizing. Hopefully my mother has learned by now that my partners actually LIKE my intersex body, and make good use of it.

My parents were very broad minded. They were not ashamed of their bodies and walked around the house naked. I always thought that this was normal. When I was an adult they discussed sex with me as something that is pleasurable and shared between two people. They tell me that they still have an energetic sex life :grinning:

My parents are in there 80’s and have never mentioned anything about sex.
I thought it was abit weird that when I was 16 or what ever age it was they never had a chat with me about or it even asked when we were learning about it at school. Not that I didn’t know what I was doing lol . The oh came from the same kind of back ground but her dad was a bit old fashioned lol . When I first moved in with her. He asked her where I was going to sleep lol .

I think my parents were very straight laced and old fashioned but my wifes parents were even more so and this rubbed onto my wifes attitude and thinking.

So an interesting question with a long answer: a lot of my liberal views towards sex are because of my parents’ (particularly Mum’s) attitudes and behaviours towards sex.

Basically, my Mum told me that sex wasn’t enjoyable for women, we just do it to please men and women who enjoy sex are weird. So for a long time I believed that sex was dull and unenjoyable, then I had sex for the first time and I enjoyed it. I was 19 when I lost my viriginity - it seemed pointless to me if I wasn’t going to enjoy it!

I later learned that my parents were swingers, but rather than saying she’d had problems in the swinging lifestyle, my Mum just gaslit me about women’s experiences of sex. Just another of my mother’s misdeeds against me.

So, now that I enjoy sex and I’ve learned a lot about it (including that enjoying sex is a good thing!), I try to be a safe and helpful space for others who enjoy - or want to enjoy - sex

Here it’s not spoken about or mentioned at all

I was very lucky. Sex in our house was openly talked about and questions answered if i had any. My mum and step dad found it very important to not demonise sex.
Im the same in our house now and have always had very open conversations with my eldest. Now at an age where his sexual journey is beginning we have discussed consent and respect, negotiation and consideration. We’ve discussed the fictional aspect of porn and what happens behind the scenes and societys expectations of the human body and whats seen in the media versus what a human body actually looks like without the filters, effects and airbrushing etc. He will occasionally ask me about something ive never heard of and have to google just to have a discussion about it :rofl::rofl:
I love that hes so comfortable to have these conversations with me and hopefully he will carry that on if he has kids of his own!

My wife and I had fairly similar upbringings - with different results.

My parents never discussed sex. It was the same for my wife, although she got it into her head (partly because of a semi-religious background) that her parents would strongly disapprove of us having sex before we got married. So we didn’t.

My wife still suffers from wondering what other people would think about our sexual activities if they somehow knew the details, which prevents her from enjoying it as much as she should, but I gave up inhibitions a long time ago.

My parents never talked about sex. The only thing I ever heard was “ dont get that girl pregnant” and my dad offered to give me a sex talk hours before my wedding ( shit timing) .

They didnt really talk that much about it. My mother did say once “your father was really coarse and would just say get them knickers off” but quite early in my life they stopped sleeping together. I think they only stayed together because of us and then when we had left home just because they didnt know what else they could do.

Parents never spoke about it, they were not aganst it but just never spoke about it.

Mr K here. Mine are very laid back when it comes to sex although we don’t discuss it.

I remember my parents leaving a paper chemist bag outside my bedroom door and it was full of condoms.

They never even knocked or spoke to me about it so 18 year old me has the decision of leaving them and probably getting spoken too later about why I left them or just taking them and we all just pretend it never happened :joy:

My Mum also did competitor parties when I was 6 or 7 (not that I had a clue what that was at that age). So I found a cake mould of a rocketship in the cutlery drawer. Only when I grew up did I realise it was a penis and balls mould. I thought the balls were the rocket boosters :joy:

So they know sex happens and are probably kinky themselves but we are all too embarrassed/awkward to actually speak about it.
