I did try some some copper tape that was useless as neither the slugs or the snails were bothered by it at all.
Bran was a good one for us. Needs to be dry to work so you have to re aply it if it gets wet. But its a good mulch. For this obvious reason , works best inside a greenhouse etc. Unless your relegious about shoving more out when it rains
Apparently Nematodes are a good cure for slugs, safe for pet owners too.
The meadowy bit of my garden is attracting plenty of bees and butterflies today. Especially the marjoram that has ‘escaped’ from my herb patch.
I’m no expert but there’s Cabbage Whites, Red Admirals, Peacocks, Painted Lady, Commas (I think) and some little brown ones.
Honey bees and bumble bees too
We spotted our first toad in the garden this week, relaxing in the shade underneath a shrub, think I may have started it when watering the hanging basket above. We built the wildlife pond in May 2020 so has taken quite a while to attract a toad or frog.
We’ve owned this house for 5 years in August and have had to put in a huge amount of work (and expense!) to get the garden into a condition where we can finally sit out and enjoy it but its been very worthwhile
Amazing - my ‘pond’ is a four foot long Belfast sink that I found buried in my garden last year. I have it at a slight angle with one end buried and plenty of large stones at the deeper end and logs at the shallow. The sparrows and starlings love it.
Our froglets have started escaping the pond
Froglets are just amazing Mrs Onlyones hates frogs but loves froglets.
The rain is finally here!
together with my first ripe tomato
Our Borage has just started flowering, but the Rudbeckia have taken a right pounding in the wind and rain.
I feared for my little cherry tree in the wind yesterday but it looks OK
Well, the high winds blew the beans and peas over and unearthed quite a few of the onions. Wasnt even a very big storm for us (50mph is pretty normal round here at certain times of year) must have just hit the garden at the right angle
Plenty of rain today but the wind has subsided - yay
My garden definitely needed the rain! Even after some heavy rain earlier in the week tubs and baskets were really dry so watered them last night.
This wind is ripping through my tomato plants. Moved a few but think I might have lost half through the night
Luckily our tomato plants are in pots so I shifted them to a sheltered area yesterday in anticipation of windy weather but we seem to have been spared that… just heavy rain instead.
The wind has destroyed the last of our Rudbeckia ,but the beans and the toms seem to be ok at the moment.
“Look at the size of those beauties!”
Courgettes of course. With the recent sun followed by rain, mine have gone mad. The size of the plants, the size of the courgettes and the sheer numbers.
Ideas anyone?
Ratatoillie? Lots of pasta bakes? That thing where you make spagetti out of corgettes? Chutney?
All else fails we find leaving them on neibours doorsteps gets shot of them nicely
Off loaded a few on the neighbour
Cooking spag bol tonight with quorn mince too
Have roasted some as well
Still a few kilos to go
