Nail polish - chit chat

Oh @Forever_his I wish I could send you all of them! And the lamps are surprisingly good for something that was free! Although I won’t tell you the extortionate amount I payed on each order of gels :woman_facepalming:t3:

Lol I’d hate to think! I bet they were worth it though…

Sometimes when I’m in the salon waiting for my nails to dry I’ll add up the price of each shelf in my head… Crazy how such tiny amounts of liquid all add up to! :exploding_head:

I know, some people could never imagine the price I pay on an order, and don’t even get me started on hair colours and products… it’s always a four figure number. But it’s my life and trade and I do ok from it

I wonder if any of you guys can help me. The last couple of times I’ve painted my nails, after a day its started peeling off. Not just chipped, the whole lot has peeled off in one smooth motion.

Any ideas why or what I can do to stop it? Could it just be the polish is naff?

Heres what I did the last two times

Base coat (no idea on brand just an old bottle)
First colour coat (generic brand)
Second coat of colour (same generic brand)
Coat of glitter polish (same brand)
Finished off with a top coat.

All coats dried before the next one. Any ideas? Or tips of what I can do to help it stick? Thanks

I’ve never been a massive fan of OPI, it just chips too much for me. I dehydrate my nails, buff, file, even used their chip skip and still chips :frowning:

I like using Zoya, doesn’t chip as much.

I use this site, get some good offers on polishes Nail Polish Direct

I’ve had a similar problem, as odd as it sounds i think at least part of the issue may be using too many layers (and/or making those too thick). I could be completely wrong but that’s what seems to cause it with me (i was using proper branded stuff)

@Forever_his I find it peels rather than chips. I wonder if it is something to do with modern formulas?
@Blonde_Bunny might know?

Heya @Forever_his, are you certain you’re not loosing a super skinny top layer of your actual nail as well? It’s really common for nails to become damaged and you can quite easily loose a top layer of nail.

The fact that the whole entire lot, all layers of polish of coming off in one sheet suggests that the original base layer hasn’t bonded correctly or as I mentioned, possibly loosing the top layer of your actual nail :blush:

I would be changing your base coat as the first measure though  If the base coat doesn’t stick or fails, all subsequent coatings will fail too.

Just imagine you’re base coat is an old layer of wall paper that you’re going to paint over, you turn on your central heating after you’ve finished painting your lovely living room and the old wall paper begins to peel off leaving you with bare plaster walls and a sheet of paper and paint on the floor

@Forever_his - if it’s peeling off, leaving a naked nail surface, my 1st thought is that the basecoat you’re using is the culprit.

Another thought: are you leaving a good, long time between applying the 2nd colour coat and the glitter coat? Maybe the solvents in the glitter coat are softening the lower layers? Mind you, I’d expect this to just make everything horribly gunky rather than give you something that peels off.

3rd thought: Could it be your brand of nail polish remover? Or are you perhaps doing something nail-care wise which might make your nails “oily” or coated in something so the basecoat can’t stick properly? For instance, do you moisturise your hands between polish applications - could some of that residue be left on/in your nails?

I think the others have basically covered it, but it does sound like your base coat is the issue. Your natural nails have oils in so it’s best practice to go over them with a quick swipe of nail polish remover first, as this will help it bond. Also, you mentioned that it’s an old base coat - it may be that it’s just past its expiry! Polishes do last ages but if its split or dried out then the base coat won’t be acting as it should

Ah thanks you folks! The base coat was my first suspicion so I’ll have to look for a new one.

@Blonde_Bunny I am for sure losing the top layer of my actual nail too. Does this mean something different?

@MsR that is exactly what its like. Peeling straight off.

Thanks everyone :kissing_heart:

Love this analogy! If only I was so methodical with DIY as I am painting nails :joy:

You and me both! :rofl::rofl::rofl:

So this is actually a lot more common than you’d think and I’ve seen it sooooo many times. Of course every person is different with the causes of it being so many possibilities. Usually the most common is from cleaning products, dish soaps and that sort of stuff.

Your nails are made of keratin layers quite similar to your hair and your skin and you’d be surprised just how fragile they can be. The usual cause of damage I’ve seen is from over buffing, poor quality gels, polishes and base coats, people not letting acetone work long enough to completely soften and break down old gels and polishes. I can also tell you from first hand experience that long exposure to hot water and humidity will ruin your nails if you don’t keep an eye on them - this is why my nails are forever damaged from my hot tub.

Also being dehydrated can have a massive effect on your nails! Drink.

My advice for helping to fix this is leave your nails bare for a couple of weeks, use gloves when washing up, try to keep your hands out the water as much as you can if taking long baths but the super easy and single most important thing is moisturise moisturise moisturise! Your nails need moisture as much if not more than your skin!

And drink water like there’s going to be a drought!:sweat_drops:

Some of mine peeled off due to my impatience with the last set of polish. Since then I’ve been using aloe vera and some oil on the nails and there is actually a visible difference, they look and feel so much better (i just bought an oil pen cheap on ebay though any oil will work, i just like the pen/brush format and I’m going to try to dismantle and refill it - if that doesn’t work I’m going to fill an old polish bottle with olive oil :joy:)

Love red . Nail polish Underwear. Redheads. Pubes

Thanks @Blonde_Bunny. I drink like a fish :fish: so I’m happy with that. But I absolutely do not cover my hands in water, with 2 kids, a full-time job and a diva pooch, I barely have time to stop let alone remember gloves haha. But this is something I will try and work on.

I don’t buffer to be honest, just give a little shape now and again with an emery board. The last time I took my polish off, I let sit in nail varnish remover for a few minutes of each nail and then wiped away. So possibly not long enough.

I’m going to invest in a nice new nail oil and treat myself to a decent base coat maybe with some fancy moisturising ingredients in.

Thanks love :kissing_heart:
