What cheered me up recently

She is on so many pain meds and muscle relaxers along with anti depressants , she rarely thinks of what her request would entail . Just try and make her happy .

I’m sorry, that does change the equation of course.

Good on ya for doing it.

As for my ex-wife, she had no excuses. She and I were both young and healthy all those decades ago. And, she was a hard worker, she wasn’t lazy but she always put her foot down about things I/we needed to do.

After talking to therapists after my divorce, a few of them told me she was likely making busy work, projects to avoid having to spend time with me.

Some were yard work, but many were indoors too.

And it went way beyond just things for our house. After her parents built a house behind ours on our land in the woods, her parents were both older, in bad health (her mom was on oxygen full time not long after moving into their new home behind ours and her dad had bad knees and a few years later he had double knee replacement surgery. Due to that, I helped the both of them out a lot.

When my ex-wife’s parents moved behind us, my ex-wife was staying home then as we had our 1st child. My then wife would visit her parent’s pretty much every day being that they lived behind us on our land.

But even though my wife stayed at home and went over often, my wife still had me do things for her parents like clean their showers and tubs, vacuum their floors and do laundry for them.

Why? I wondered myself and when I asked my wife that, she told me those were my chores at our house so they were my chores at her parents house too.

So I worked, did those things in our home and I went to do them in her parents home regularly.

I cut their grass too after cutting our grass.

I was lost in the wilderness with my ex-wife…

But what really cheers me up is that Miss Heather is the opposite of my ex-wife. Sure, I help her parent’s out due to my schedule allowing for it during the day but Miss Heather still goes over after work and on weekends to help her parents out too. She isn’t telling me or giving me a honey do list of things I have to do at her parents house.

A therapy session in which I managed to name drop Lovehoney, Aneros and Veet, and a doctor telling me I’m safe to use Viagra if needed. Happy days.

This morning I finally moved my media server from a Windows machine to a Linux mini pc, after two weeks of learning basic linux commands for Linux Ubuntu server.

I did have some classic ID10T errors

:joy: @Teacake you need to look at what you are typing.

I know probably not exciting for most of you, but as I help people with their digital learning or devices, I’m proud I did something for me that’s different than Windows.

I’m pretty chuffed with myself.

Thanks @WillC :+1:

Whenever I’m helping someone, I always say you are never to old, you might be slower but you get there in the end, then I say we all started with knowing nothing about technology.

Alot of the older generation come back to me because the younger generation doesn’t have the patience and get mad if their grandparents etc.. can’t get things right.

I’m good with electronics etc and can find my way around a computer and even learned to rip and burn music just by trial and error when i first got a pc over 20 years ago. But as for programming, servers etc it’s a mystery!

I have taught my mum how to do the basics on a smart phone, and in the last month have sorted out setting up a new tv for the outlaws and set up a new Virgin box for my mum. I have over the years set up a decent surround system for my TV and hi-fi.

Glad you get satisfaction helping older people with tech, it’s a nice skill to have!

Thats great you self taught, I’m the same when I started getting into Windows computers around 2003, I have no qualifications when it comes to computer stuff, before 2003 I used to get asked at work do you want us to build you a computer, na I will never use it, but when you get the bug it’s pretty addictive.

When the younger generation say it’s easy I just tell the older generation wait until they want to learn to drive, then it’s your turn to say it’s easy. :joy:

I did have a ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 when I was a kid but that was just games.

When i was a kid the height of game technology was one of those systems you hooked up to the tv to play a very crude version of tennis! I did have a Wii and a PS2 around 20 years ago but they were solely to play Guitar Hero and Rock Band, to the point my fingers blistered and bled! :joy:

I could on medium difficulty, but it tore my fingers to pieces! Also Hangar 18 by Megadeth was a bitch!

Good for you. You should be proud. That’s a big step.

Several years ago I looked into Linux, read up on it, watched vids etc. as I’de been a long time Windows user since the mid 90’s at both work and at home.

I was honestly going to give Linux a go… and then I bought a MacBook Air laptop instead.

I knew I was fed up with Windows so I was going to do something different.

You are braver than I was and I do congratulate you on your transition. I chickened out by switching to Mac instead of Linux when I was getting away from Windows.

It will only get easier for you as you go.

Thanks

I’m still a Window user as Linux is really for my media streaming, but knowing alot of commands is a must even for the streaming server I use. I kept on thinking I’m not going headless I will use a desktop version to make it a bit easier, but in the end I jumped right in at the deep end,as that is the only way to learn, it’s still going to take me ages to get to grips with commands, but I have the basics and a trusty sheet sheet if I get stuck.

And of course there is always chatgpt :grimacing:

I kept my Asus Zenbook and I will break it out once every few weeks or so. I do like the screen better as it has an OLED screen and the screens on the Macs are nice, but not quite that good.

I have no doubt it will get much easier for you and quickly too. You’re right, jumping into the deep end helps in that regard.

And yes, there is a lot of help and tutorials online.

You’re gonna be just fine.
