❗ Writing reviews and the use of AI

Hi All,

I have started to notice a trend recently, of some submitted reviews reading as if they were written by AI. So I thought I would pop a little post up to clarify our position on this.

We do not want reviews that have been written by AI submitted. If you are using AI to write reviews in the hopes of becoming a tester, please stop - if it is discovered that your reviews were not written by yourself, and were instead written by AI, then you will be removed from the tester programme.

Why?

Well, firstly - we need to trust our reviewers. Y’all are the other customers’ first chance to see how real people found the product to be. We want honest reviews from real people, that is the most important part.

Secondly, people are getting better at noticing when content is AI generated. Seeing AI generated reviews will negatively impact all the reviews, as now they have been cast in an untrustworthy light.

I understand that it can be hard to write 7-10 well written reviews, but this isn’t the answer. We want to hear your thoughts, feelings, likes and dislikes - not a sales pitch from a computer.

Before anyone panics, the majority of reviews are perfectly fine and I can tell were written by human beings. This is a reminder for the small minority who are using, or might be tempted to use AI.

Thanks all :lovehoney_heart:

I can’t actually believe this is a thing

I can’t imagine AI getting the point across about how much I enjoyed a toy :woman_facepalming:t3:

I never even considered this. It’s actually quite sad; writing reviews is like therapy to me, and getting across how I personally feel is the magic of it (and the point). Glad you’re able to spot the difference!

And here we go again with another example of AI.

I haven’t written a review for ages but when I was in the flow of it, the joy and fun was all in the writing like reliving the experience.

Why would someone use AI to do a review on items purchased when people read the reviews to determine whether or no they are going to purchase the items for themselves. I really dont get it.

Blimey it wouldn’t even occur to me to do this. As has been said, it’s personal views and feelings that are the critical aspects of writing a review and that can’t be replicated by AI.
I actually love writing reviews!

It wouldn’t cross my mind to use AI for something like that :woman_shrugging:t2:

When all you have to do is put across your thoughts and experience on a particular item, i fail to see why you’d use A.I. unless you’re too idle to think for yourself.

Is it?

I have occasionally experienced writer’s block regarding testers: how do I convey that this was really fun to use, even though it wasn’t directly responsible for the orgasms at the end of the session? How to relate that we ignored some features because they won’t be part of our regular use? How do I convey that even with my critiques, this is a 5 star at the end of the day?

Writing reviews for the things we purchased out-of-pocket has very little pressure.

Because the people doing it aren’t doing it to be helpful, they’re doing it to get on the tester program and receive free toys without bothering to put in thought or effort. I imagine it’s very possible they don’t even own all of the toys they’re reviewing.

I said in another post that I would sometimes use AI for writing letters in work but I wouldn’t use it for a review!

I guess I should count myself lucky that my writing and grammar peaked halfway into middle school!

Hopefully it will show that I am actually writing the reviews myself

That’s annoying! I rely on reviews to make a decision about what to buy, fake reviews would be concerning to LH and genuine customers. To be honest, I don’t think I would have a clue how to tell if someone had used AI, let alone know how to go about using it. I think that has as much to do with the fact that I really don’t like the idea of a computer imitating a human, it seems like something out of a sci fi book where robots take over the world or something! Is there something that can be done to flag tell-tale signs of AI use before reviews are published? I guess it would come at a cost though.

Never occurred to me, it is the general direction of travel, students using it for assignments, people using it to write novels, it would be interesting to see how 50 shades would read if it were AI written.

Personally I like writing honest reviews in the hope that others find them useful when selecting products.

I’ve read some posts recently that I thought read a little like it was written by AI, but didn’t think anyone would actually do it. Wild that people may do this and also use it for reviews.

Haha how weird… who’d wanna do an AI review anyway as surely it wouldn’t give anything to that great a detail with out you having to practically write a review yourself for it to go by to reword :thinking:

I’ve only ever used AI to look up information and I’ve found so many errors in the information provided by AI that I would never dream of using it to actually generate content.

@AJSTAR you just tell it to read everyone else’s reviews and produce a review of however many paragraphs, positive or negative based on them.

You come rather unstuck when sent prototypes or testers without any reviews up on LH or elsewhere yet, though.

I think AI is a tricky thing. I hate all the “photos” that crop up on Facebook and the like, claiming to be real, but are actually AI generated and I hate it used for stuff like we are discussing here or student’s cheating on assignments but it has it’s fun side too. There are some really good Podcasts that utilise aspects of AI to come up with entertaining listening and I’ve had very amusing conversations with the Lovehoney AI about theoretical time travel, worm holes and quantum physics though it does prefer to talk about sex toys.

Wowzers! It’s crazy how far technology is coming along! But I guess with everything there’s a good/bad balance to be had, it’s just how the hands of the beholder uses it

Oh dear…

Another downside to technology…it’s partly laziness and unfortunately a sign of the times. Using our own words and brains is slowly ebbing away…such a shame.

It’s a privilege being chosen to test an item…put your mark on the reviews…write it your way…your style…stand out. Say what worked…what didn’t…how it looked…how it was presented. It’s not rocket science.

We the public want real people’s perception…and honesty too…
If you genuinely feel you can’t write a review…
Then the tester programme isn’t for you.
