My hubby is a big fan of anal both plugs and dildos. The medium plug is easy to insert and slips out with to much movement the large plug goes in with a good warm up and doesnt budge during play the large dildo doesnt require much warm up and can be comfortably taken all the way.
He is looking for something to add to the collection not quite as thick as the large plug but thicker than the dildo but not longer or much longer at least as hes looking for more stretch than depth.
Any suggestions of what to look for would be amazing either plug or dildo he is happy with both. Looked at inflatable ones but not sure if they would be right.

My first go to recommendation would have been an inflatable plug but if already looked into them then maybe try seeing if there’s any of them short girthy dildos available as might tick all the boxes 
Agree with @AJSTAR, there is This one, , This one or if you really want to go all out there is this Big boy!. I’ve been looking at them for week plucking up the courage to put them in my basket…so to speak!

I have a the same larger butt plug, and have this suggested dildo @OlderDude mentioned and it is fantastic.
I also like a stretch and use this inflatable as part of my warm up. It gives fullness and stretch.
