We've had a LOT of requests from members lately wanting to change their screen names.
This is a (slightly more than) gentle reminder that changing screen names is an absolute nightmare for us.
When you sign up for your community account, it does state that you should think very hard about the username you go for because it can't be changed once you've picked it, and this is true.
Although we do have the physical ability to change account names in-house, the work it involves to fix broken links around the website after we've changed a name is quite a big problem.
Historically, we've only ever changed screen names under extreme circumstances, but it seems of late we've been saying 'yes' to more and more members, and it's getting out of hand. This isn't any fault of our lovely members, of course, but I wanted to make it clear to everyone how the process works at this end.
I've also reiterated this to the peeps at LH HQ to make sure we're all 'singing from the same song sheet', so to speak.
If you find yourself in a situation where you'd like a new username, it's much easier for us (in most instances) for you to set up a brand new account yourself, and for us to transfer your order history/Oh! Points accross from the old account to the new one.

I have no intention of changing my name, but wondered what sort of circumstances would be deemed "extreme"? Just for future reference maybe?

We used to say we'd change screen names for anyone who was really worried about their identity being discovered by someone who they didn't want to know who they were - however EVERYONE says this (pretty much) and really, more thought needs to be put into the process of picking the username in the first place.
The only reason we have the power to change usernames is because some people use their email address as a sneaky way of starting kinky chat elsewhere, and we need to be able to change these.
Perhaps in the future we should remove the ability to change usernames alltogether and if someone breaks the rules and uses an email address or something offensive as a screen name, we just suspend them. I don't know - now I'm just thinking outloud!
I used that reason when my username was changed this morning. I didn't know that this was the only circumstance in which it was permissible but it was the only one that applied to me.

Eeek sorry Jess, I had similar reasons for wanting to change mine, well that and there is some porn thing with a similar name to mine old name too... I didn't realise what hassle it caused changing names so my biggest apologies x

Actually how long did ur name take to change over.. I'm still new name at present?
I don't know. I requested it yesterday evening and got a confirmation email this morning.
Personally it confuses the heck outta me

My name was one I had used for other things which I had to change, when I signed up I didn't really think I'd use forums as much as I do... Also if u type my old name in Google to throws up some porn thing, which might I add, isn't me so I had been thinking with ages to change it, I also have mentioned it before on threads bout changing it... I really didn't realise it was such a big thing... : /

For everyone who has changed their name today, please don't worry about it! It's not your fault at all, and this post isn't because of the changes we've had today. It's a thread I've been thinking about posting for a while now (Every Monday I come into a pile of name changes!) so this isn't a 'finger pointing' thread, I just want to make things clearer for the future :)

No it's ok! I think, for some reason, our system doesn't like the new name you've picked. We're trying to do a work around for you, but it might be worth thinking of a back up in case we can't get it to work! Sorry about this!
