Beginners advice for vibrators?

I am looking to purchase my first vibrator and was wondering whether anyone can offer me any advice on the subject? Are there any which are particularly suitable for beginners? Something you would recommend? All tips and advice welcome as im really in a pickle here and a little overwhelmed when i see the page on here full of vibrators. I really do not know what i am looking for. Thanks all.

Depends on if you'd like it for penetration or just clit usage?

This was my first vibrator http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=16603 and its amazing so powerful, i didnt fancy going for a bullet like most people do ad i like thing big lol. It's still one of my favourites.

Dont forget the lube and cleaner

I'd begin by writing a list of what you would like/not like. For example when we were buying our first toy we wanted something 'whisper' quiet (I didn't want something intrusive) and rechargable (batteries are the bane of my life). I also didn't want anything that was anatomically formed - I have an OH for that. I chose a 'traditional' vibe in the end over a bullet vibe because if I didn't like the vibrations internally it could still be used on my clit, or act like a dildo. One thing to consider - when you masterbate what sort of strokes do you like? Soft and gentle? Fast and hard? Continuous or pulsing? That'll help you decide what sort of speed, power, and pattern of vibrations you want. Also there is budget - how much are you willing to spend?

Editted to say LH have also written a few buyers guides which may be worth viewing. There is a beginners guide and a how to choose the best vibe. http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/sex-toys/vibrators/buyers-guide/

Editted again to say sorry KebertXela - didn't see you'd also linked this! :)

I'll second that :D it's brilliant :D I even replaced it when mine got broken :D

I love it! It's still one of my must have most loved toys! Xx

Oops - now added - see below:)

http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/sex-toys/vibrators/buyers-guide/how-to-choose-the-perfect-vibrator/

i started off with a vibe exactly like the beginners basic ladyfinger http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=25883 but from somewhere else i think if you want a vibrator start off with something slim, simple, cheap and you can experiment with internal and external stimulation if you don't like it you haven't wasted a small fortune

Decide what you want from it, your ideal length, how big you want it to feel inside you (pay particular attention to the girth measurements) whether you want it to move around inside you or you've got to move it, whether you want clit stimluaiton as well...whether you want waterproof, quiet, battery type, colour(?) price range! And as KX said, don't forget the lube and cleaner!

Would just like to say thank you to everyone for your replies! Has been very helpful :)

Writing like a list is a good idea, except I'm really not sure what I'm looking for! I don't masturbate and I wanted to buy this vibrator so that I could perhaps start? I've tried many times with just my hand and nothing works, I can't get turned on at all. So people in another forum I posted on Cosmopolitan recommended that I get a vibrator. I guess that the only thing I am sure that is needed is the quietness factor, the one which Lollipop ;) recommended looks good.

Maybe get a little porno movie as well... My OH always said at the start she felt a little weird lying there and rubbing herself but found watching a little porn really helped and from there she found it much easier to start with toys, but even porn can be like buying a vibrator, it can be hit and miss on what you like and what turns you on, for example my wife loves a clip from Peter North with Krystle Steele and another girl in it, it always gets her going, but we have other stuff which she might only like sometimes....

And it's also good to know that maybe a vibrator isn't for you, maybe your more of a dildo girl or a Sqweel person... My OH used to be all about clitoral stimulation from toys, then she went a bit internal and then she was on a 9 month break while pregnant and decided that she wanted to get rid of all our toys (bloody hormones) ...... Surprise surprise she has now decided that she misses using playing with then and we a re-building a collection, however what she's now noticed is she isn't as much into vibrators now and is much more into dildos, which she'd previously hated... So you see you might not get it right first time, it's all about trying and see what works.

Everyone's advise her is great but mine would be find one you like the look of and make sure it's not too big and buy it and see what you like and what you didn't and then you can always get another..... Half the women probably own more than one vibrator.

My OH said to say that you should probably go with one like the Ladyfinger mentioned about but maybe get a small bullet something like the Tracey Cox mini bullet....

And don't forget some good lube and some anti-bac.....

Most of all..... Enjoy

Wow thanks so much for that reply :)
I'm not so sure about the porn movie though, I have tried to watch them before and I always just end up.. Well.. Laughing really! They make me feel so cringeworthy :( But have heard that erotic books might e a good way to go, seeing as I like reading so much haha! But I get the gist of what you were saying, I'm thinking I need some other kind of mental stimulation or distraction from my own thoughts or something..

Fact is, I'm not sure what I would want, I don't even know what kind of stimulation I need to get myself there. Interesting that you would recommend a small bullet vibrator, I'm not sure that clitoral stimulation would be enough to orgasm. It's all a little confusing to me, a little overwhelming in fact. Think I'm going to have to try a few out :/ Only problem is I don't really have a great deal of money to keep buying them lol

I know what you mean with the cheesy comment, some of the studf really is, but that's why you need to look around and different types but you can always give the books a try, my OH just finds the visual stimulation while your masturbating really helps.... She reckons holding a book and a vibrator and using lube might be a bit tricky.

I know what you mean regarding spending a lot, but there are some really good vibes out there for £10, you don't need to jump in at the deepend and buy a Lelo Wand or an expensive Rabbit.

My wife always thought this was a great bullet
http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=14042

When she had her clear out this was the only one she kept, firstly because its small, discreet and in a handy tin but also because she was going away with work abroad for a few days and was really nervous so I bought it for her, wrote a note in it and hid it in her luggage.... After that she took it on every trip.

My OH says there isn't a doubt that this won't make you O from clitoral stimulation.

In that case while you're browsing the vibes I would recommend one that has different patterns as well as speeds. Look at the product describtions under Power & Speed. (I personally like a pulsating vibe on my clitoris and no vibration internally). I think this would allow you to explore and find out what pushes your buttons so to speak. :)

Or the alternate would be to get something like the one Lollipop suggested, and if it doesn't achieve what you want it to, to send it back. LH have an amazing returns policy - even for vibes you've used but just did not enjoy. This would let you try a wide variety to find the right one for you.

Sorry only just seen this post. (That'll teach me to post while eating breakfast!)

As I put above - that is the great thing about LH. Set yourself a budget (Say £15). Buy a vibe. Love it - great keep it. Not love it/hate it/does nothing for you. Send it back get a refund. Buy another vibe. Etc until you find the vibe for you. :)

Yeah I understand what you're saying. Maybe i do need to look around a little to see if anything does get me going. Just that the ones that I've looked at are quite cheesey so it kind of put me off. I didn't think about holding the book haha I am not that dexterous so probably would cause a problem :P

Thanks for the recommendation, after your first post that was the one that most appealed to me and maybe buying a small bullet may be better for first time, I imagine jumping straight in to a huge ( well they seem that way to me ) vibrating dildo might be a little intimidating. Good thing is with the Tracey Cox one too is that it's waterproof, I quite like the idea of being able to use it in the shower, really the only place where I can get a little privacy. I haven't spoken to my partner about all of this because I am worried it might scare him off a little or make him feel like he's not satisfying my needs ( which is not the case at all ). I don't know how he would feel about me getting a vibrator and let alone know how I would bring it up.

It's great to get both yours and your OHs perspective in all of this, I truly appreciate it. Have never had an orgasm so have no idea what it would take for me to have one, maybe am just a little down on myself and telling myself that I won't be able to really isn't going to help my situation! Need a little PMA (positive mental attitude) when approaching the subject. Just that it's been getting me so down lately I'm not sure if anything's going to work!

Wow, I had no idea their returns policy was so relaxed! That's took a weight off of my shoulders :) Thank you.

Will look at the Power & Speed section, I like the idea of a range of patterns. Thanks for your advice.

I'd definitely advise the Tracey Cox bullet! I'm pretty much in the same boat as you I can't ever seem to switch off, maybe try a hot soak in the bath with a few candles (nothing more relaxing than a hot bath). & as for introducing your toy I'd 100% advise a bullet because its something you can use on the both of you great for the tip of him he can use it on you around the nipples just say its to make things a little more adventurous..my partner wasnt built up on the idea but once he'd seen the size he was more than happy :) hope this helps. Good luck on your journey!
