At 4 inches it's only an inch bigger (circumferance wise) than the BASIC one but for a beginner (and as a beginner) I personally would work up to that one!
With anal - it's best to play it safe to begin with as getting it wrong can be painful.
Oh and use lube, lube, lube and more lube for any anal play!

Slightly off topic, but watching the programme about wormwood scrubs where the prisoners are "plugging" themselves with mobiles to get them inside, apparently even Blackberry's have been used Not so much the size that concerned me but the speed and ease they did it when they smuggled it.....

I have just experienced my first taste of a butt plug and wow what a great feeling i can't seem to get enough of it the one i have started with is the super slim 5" butt plug now thinking of moving on to something a little bigger
After just experiencing my first taste of a butt plug (not litteraly) i found it hard to keep in place i used a fair amount of lube but when i stood up it just slid out did i use to much lube ??????
Could be too much lube, or it could be just an awkward size/shape for you. The muscles will auomatically try to push it out a bit, so if it doesn't have a skinnier waist, it can just be shoved right back out. Even something similar, like http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=16053 would probably be a little easier to hold, as the sphincter will clench around the slimmest part, and make it harder for the body to push the larger body of the plug back out. It's one of the reasons it's actually easier to hold a larger plug for longer, because it's the difference between the neck and the body that makes it harder to be expelled (just don't be tempted to go too massive too fast, as you still have to get the widest part in and out!).
Smaller plugs are harder to retain as BashfulBabe has pointed out but don`t skimp on the lube. Also make sure it is for anal play.

It is hard finding one that will sit firmly in place, without popping out or gradually sliding out, some of the easiest I find to wear inside for a long time are the tracy cox (sp?) advanced butt plugs, the smaller is very much on the smaller side of what I'll bother with now, but even though it still sits inside with hardly any slippage (and has the advantage that with both the smaller and larger ones in the kit, neither I need lube with to insert if I'm just wanting to wear it in for a long time).

Its good as it doesnt' require much lube, which I guess helps it stay in place better, but as its quite friction free (being glass), it can tend to gradually side out; But the best thing has to be its weight... its so nice* and heavy feeling it inside, and I hope to get a review of that one finished some time soon.

I dont go for big stretching ones tbh so these may not please you if your used to massive girths but i prefer them to be smaller and prepare for anal or as a teasing toy during sex or foreplay x

Just work up to it slowely... Plenty of lube at first, and before long it'll just gradually get easier... I remember how I was when I first got into Butt plugs, and now, I can quite often take one with a 2 inch diameter without having to use any lube, or if I do, just the very smallest amount of lube (which is handy to make it stay in better), but just remember if its hurting, then you're potentially doing dammage, so pull back, slow down, work up to it more slowely...
I find some of the inflatible plugs very good, as often they're not that* big when un-inflated, and so you can insert very easily, and then pump up to be more filled... though of course the same thing goes for pain, if it starts hurting too much, you've probably gone too* far...
and agreed about the glass plugs, got my first not long back, the : http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=17139 and it just feels great, the side is nice, not too* long, and its wide enough to stretch a bit (for me), but the weight... Oo you don't get that with the silicon plugs, as good as they might be..
I've tried the glass plug heated up, and cooled down, and so far at least I'm liking having it cold on insertion... they're a breeze to clean too which is always a big plus...
