There's actually plenty advice under the search bar, but briefly, start with something small to medium and with a decent t-bar to stop unwanted travel, would probably recommend silicone to start, and the lovehoney booty buddy is a great beginners plug. Use plenty of lube, and if you want to wear for several hours, it's probably best to build up rather than go all out right away.

I really love the doc johnson range, I find these toys so comfortable, they do smell slightly when first opened but they are excellent, also on 2 for £15 :)

I'll add, if you want to wear for an extended time, an oil based lube is better, as the others will dry out, which can then become uncomfy?

Lots of great advice already, just want to add that as a beginner I would suggest you try something that's tapered rather than bulbous. Also, make sure you go for one that has quite a thin stem. THat's the part that can really hurt from long term use if you're not practiced. Beyond that, I'm a big fan of anal jelly like this one: http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=8309. It gently desensitises as well until you can get more confident and comfortable.
