The UK has reached a landmark target in the battle against HIV.
The target for 2020 was to 90% of people with HIV were diagnosed, 90% of diagnosed patients were recieving treatment and 90% of people treated were viral surpressed (meaning they cannot pass on the virus)
Public Health England stats show that these targets were met last year, infact, the figures were even better, 92%, 98% and 97% respectively.
Overall 87% with the virus in the UK have undetectable trace of the virus and are unable to pass it on, thanks to treatment.
A young person diagnosed with HIV can now expect to live a full healthy life.
For me becoming an adult in the 80s, watching the adverts of the plague that was heading our way, this is incredible news. Its taken a lot of years and too many have lost their battles with HIV. But now, thanks to incredible scientists and the brave patients who have taken part in clinical trials, maybe, just maybe the end is in sight for this horrible disease.
For someone that was born in the early 90's, it was something that was a kind of taboo subject. I am so glad that this has happened and that it no longer is the sexual disease to be feared.
That is so amazing and positive, thank you hampshirecouple for letting us know.
It is deeply sad all the people, including celebrities that have been lost to this disease and even it's development into AIDS. At least it can be suppressed now which is an amazing development and success for the UK.
Hopefully the positive, hard work of doctors and scientists will have the same outcome for other countries. x
