whats the point in the friends thing on here?

Nope you can't chat anymore, back in the day you could I believe. I think these days it's more of just a friendly gesture to ackowledge you think someone is super awesome, lol :) At least when people friend request me that's what I tell myself x
It's a left over feature from when there used to be a chat feature.
Nowadays, it doesn't really have a 'purpose' but people still 'Add' friends as gesture and you can secret wish list shop, so you can purchase items from someone wish list and send it to them. It doesn't happen all that often, but sometimes members who have known each other a while might send each other little gifts for birthdays or just because they were helpful, or needed cheering up. But it's not something you are required to join in with. It's just a friendly community so these things happen.
