Not so sexy: Thrush and Cystitis/Bladder infections

Sorry to decrease the general sexiness of the board however I need some advice.

I seem ridiculously prone to thrush, ATM its around once a month. I follow all of the usualy guidelines but it doesn't seem to make a difference. As the leaflets inside of Cannestan etc. suggest I went to the docs as I was having it so frequently. He basically shrugged his shoulders and said some people get it that often.

Now, it took a while for me to find out that Glycerin can be a problem (thanks LH!) and thats cut out, but what else? Cranberry juice can actually be unhelpful because of the amount of added sugar in it etc.

Currently I have a bladder infection (I pee every time after sex) which won't go away and the Anti-biotics the doc put me on caused thrush (it was listed in the side effects). Again I went back again as neither have gone and he's sent my sample off for testing but basically hasn't helped beyond that and I'm in a fair bit of pain and passing blood.

Help!

Hmmm now l am no doctor, and would never presume to offer any advice cos l think LH have a ruling against doing so. However might it not be worth trying a homeopathic remedy..... l am a bloke, but think that imbalances or foods, as you hint at, could be the culprit here......

TB

PS As for passing blood- l could think of at least one possible cause after seeing your blog pics!!!!!!

Knew it was there somewhere, but hope mine is sufficiently vague not to constitute medical advice, and you have been to your GP !!!

CheersTB

Hi sxe_couple,

I feel bad for you - thrush & bladder infections are miserable.

How are you feeling other than those two symptoms?

If you're tired all the time get back to the GP's asap. When I had thrush all the time it turned out I had diabetes but the docs missed it the first 2 times I went - it wasn't until I actually went in there & said "I'm exhausted, I'm having to pee all the time and I've lost 2 stone in the last 6 weeks - something isn't right!" that they did a blood test.

Don't mean to offer advice but sometimes thrush can be a symtom of another problem, it's worth nagging the doc.

To avoid bladder problems it's sometimes a good idea to go for a pee before sex (avoids it getting bumped during sex).

Hope you sort it asap

Much love

x

I too suffer with thrush badly, can get it monthly at times and when its really bad im red raw :(

My doctor said some women are more prone than others. He gives me pessaries like you can get over the counter but with a pescription you get a course of 6 to use for 6 days. That will normally clear it up.

Loads of things can kick off an attack. Stress, tiredness, run down. Too much sugar in your diet, the pill, antibiotics, condoms. And their just the ones that set mine off :S Important to never have sugary food near you special place, had a crunchie used on me once and as nice as that was i payed later :( and another one is if doing anal , make sure the old boy doesn't accidently slip back into the wrong hole :D

I suffer so bad, so often and for so long i consider my self an expert lol and can confirm it a right pain in the .......

oh yeah and my doc is soo sweet that if he give me antibiotict he will pescribe the pessaries too :D

Thanks for the replies. We went to H&B today and picked up some cranberry tablets (strong ones too). I do get tired but its mainly from work and its not a constant problem.

My diet is really good, apart from maybe a little too much alcohol its clean and fairly low sugar. Other half is a health freak.

Don't worry peeps, I'm not looking for medical advice, just your experiences and opinions regarding various treatments you've used.

*mwah*

i had a time of getting it that often when i was younger. yes crandberry juice can have a lot of added sugar, but check the labels and it should be fine! cheaper crandberry juices usually have less sugar in them. anything over 40% crandberry is good. but drinking plenty clear fluid will help, and trying not to urinate ( though it sounds strange) can help a bit. painkillers too.

going to the docs again, or getting a second opinion will be worthwile. diabetes tests and kidney function ones can be useful too.

also remember your OH can get it from you too, so if you are having sex use condoms.

im quite prone to thrush aswell atm, try femfresh ph balancing gel, its supossed to keep ur natural levals in check, not the most plesant of things but certainly nicer than an itchy lala!! xx

Bio-active yoghurt! If you are prone to thrush try having the little actimel yoghurt drinks. As far as I understand it: antibiotics can kill the good bacteria in the gut, which in turn can cause thrush. Drinking the yoghurts helps promote good bacteria (sorry I sound like an advert). As for bladder infections; I had a nasty spate of them when I was with my ex so this is the advice I found: 1) front to back wiping (obviously) 2) cranberry juice 3) pee immediately after sex to clear any bacteria that get up there! When I has them I would constantly drink so when I went to the loo I knew I really did need to pee and it flushed away the nasties faster. I once got it so bad I was literally crawling up the walls. Ended up going to sleep with a vibe on my clit as it was the only thing that could distract me from the horrible sensations. Hope that helps! Xxx

I drink actamil too. I understand your pain though, its like torture isn't it :(

Actimel is something I've tried but get a bit lazy with, I'll try harder.

I read about the cranberry juice and supposedly you need to drink 16 glasses of the good stuff a day to see any benefit, or you can take 600mg of cranberry extract in one handy tablet!

Thanks for the hint about the ACIDOPHILUS COMPLEX CAPSULES, I've never heard of them but I'll go off and investigate.

xxx thanks lovely people.

Aww, i know how you must be feeling, I'm very prone to thrush too and earlier this year I had the mother of all bladder infections!!

Doc prescribed me antibiotics for the cystitis along with potassium citrate mixture, which you can buy cheaply overe the counter and any chemists. Tastes foul but it works. Passing blood is another sign of infection.

If I were you i'd be tempted to get a second opinion from a different doc. x

I've been into the Docs three times now.

1st time Antibiotics

2nd time Came down with thrush, Antibiotcs haven't cleared up the bladder infection. Lower back pain and kidney pain, blood in urine.

3rd time Shrugged off as my test results aren't back (and still aren't) so I'm currently using Nurofen, drinking tonnes. Cranberry extract. I'm tempted by the Cystits meds as that eased the feeling somewhat but then again it clouded my judgement of how the infection was going.

I'm fairly fed up as we haven't been able to have any fun for what seems like weeks now, another course of antibiotics and the corresponding thrush will easily turn that into a month.

If it is Thrush then yeast needs to be cut right down. Bread, mushrooms and Marmite used to set it off for me!

Just a tip I had from a porn star - aqueous cream. Wash your bits with it and it should keep everything balanced. Get it from the pharmacist to make sure there's no perfume or colour in it. I've used nothing else for ages and not had a flare up since I started using it, even with a course of antibiotics. Worth a try.x

sxe_couple21 I would definrtly get a second opinion from a different doctor.

When I was about 18 I had the same problem, constantly having thrush and bladder infections. After countless anti-biotics and stuff for thrush my Doctor sent me off for an unltasound scan but that didn't show up anything. I was then sent back to the hospital for an exploritory op on my baldder. It turned out the opening of my bladder was very, very narrow and all the infection was gathering there as it wasn't wide enough to pass through. I had the opening of my bladder stretched and that seemed to do the trick. Since then I have only had the odd bladder infection. If I do get 1 I usually drink lots of cranberry juice and pints and pints of water to help flush it out.

That is just what happened to me and everyone is different so I would really keep on at the Doctors until you get it sorted. Good luck. x

Your wellcome hope the acidophilus complex capsules works, it doesnt have to be "natures aid" that is just the brand name i think. Nothing the doctor has ever given me eg: "canesten cream" etc works. The acidophilus complex capsules contain the same stuff as yoghurt but much more concentrated. Be sure not to get ones with yeast in as it encourages thrush.

the acidophilus capsules helped me a lot too :)

I feel for you hun.

You worried me there when you said pain in lower back/kidneys. Sometimes cystitis can turn into a kidney infection if it doesn't clear up. I hope this doesn't get construed as medical advice, it's just a heads up, but i'm sure you're already aware.

Hope things improve for you soon xx

Yeah thats why I went back in.

Second set of Antibiotics now, teamed with a pre-emtpive thrush strike. Acidophilus capusels on the way (peeps who take these, do you do so daily?)
