Hello, I know how you feel, I have had a couple of bad ones in the past year.
Just some background in case anyone isnt sure, an UTI is caused when some bacteria get into your
uthera and travels up to your Urinary Tract Infections.
The act of completely emptying your bladder and not rushing things makes sure that there are minmial bacteria left. The best position is to sit straight and then push a little towards the end to make sure you get it all out. The other problem can be waiting too long to urinate, make sure that she drinks plenty of fluids and empties here bladder frequently. Ideally urine should be almost clear in colour, though in the mornings it is always darker. Waiting too long streches the bladder and your muscles, over time it weakens the bladder leading to it not completely empty and this may increase the risk of a UTI.
Sexual intercourse introduces bacteria as the penis like all body parts is not sterile, this can be helped by keeping good hygiene and before sex wiping over with wipes to get rid of any bacteria. The other problem is that during intercourse bacteria from the vaginal area is massaged into the uthera. The washing part goes for her too, wash before and after intercourse.
I am sure this does not need to be mentioned but always make sure you wipe front to back. After going to the toilet it is worth having a wash or giving yourself a quick wipe. This helps a lot when you are going in places like public toilets when people who are using the toilet paper have well touched it, you are then wiping yourself with paper they may have touched and that may have bacteria on it.
Scented sprays/soaps/wipes and douches can irritate the uthera leader to a higher risk of UTI. I have found since switching to a feminine ph balanced unscented wash that I have them much less frequently.
Drinking cranberry juice or taking cranberry tablets can decrease the likelyhood of getting a UTI and speed up recovery time. Drinking just two 4-ounce glasses can help a great deal.
Having showers instead of baths is better as she is less likely to have any bacteria travel into the uthera when she is showering rather than sitting in bath water.
Regularly taking vitamin C will help decrease the likelihood of UTIs as this increases the acidity level of your urine which helps decrease the number of bacteria that may be present.
Changing your position to one that creates less pressure is another idea, perhaps either from behind or her being on top may lessen the pressure.
Another tip is to wear knickers/panties with a cotton crotch, cotton lets moisture escape while other fabrics trap moisture which creates an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.
From your update, glad she is getting better. If she is prone to them after sex then some doctors suggest taking an antibiotic straight after to help mimise the risk of an UTI.
I hope these suggestions help.
