[Not so sexy] Help with UTI issues

We're just looking for some advice here regarding herself and Urinary Tract Infections.

Over the past year she's been quite prone to them, getting at least three bad infections, each caused by us having sex. Now she's been to a couple of specialists and had a cystoscopy just this morning, with the diagnosis that there is nothing phsyically wrong with her; it is just a case that she is more prone to UTIs.

Now, this means that she is getting them when we have sex and her bladder gets aggravated by added pressure; i.e., if we are doing missionary and I am grinding down heavily on her pelvis. So positions like that are to be avoided. The female doctor (my new best friend) recommended that she gets on top as often as possible. So that's great for me, but we both like to have plenty of variety in our positions.

So I've come to ask the fine folks here for some suggestions! Firstly: is anyone else in this same position? How are you dealing with it? And secondly: what fun positions would you recommend that don't involve excessive pressure on her bladded; either from me pressing against it, or herself being a bit 'folded,' for lack of a better term. We're plenty familiar with a number of positions, but we just figured we'd get people's thoughts on the matter. And hopefully hear from someone who has had this problem before.

Cheers folks!

Hello,

not sure how this would help in this situation, but I heard cranberries can help with Urinary Tract Infections. Could be worth the shot I guess.

As far as positions are concerned, did you try spooning? I think that may be bit safer compared to missionary position. Also you can try that.

Oh she's been taking cranberry supplements for years now, so we have that covered.

And spooning is something we do alright, we're just looking to get a few more suggestions, maybe outside of the more 'regular' positions.

Cheers for the response!

i am quite prone to uti's but i usually get them from using my mooncup for too long.

any sex position that causes your penis to touch her gspot is going to make her more likely to get a uti- but are we talking about one sexy session or a sexy marathon here? because if you are having long sessions then that might be why she is having trouble

does she make sure she wees before and after you have sex? maybe something simple like drinking a pint of water after you have sex and then another pint an hour later is enough to keep her bladder healthy.

i have had quite a few uti's over the last few years and really try to avoid having antibiotics if i can- i don't think they are good for you at all. if she works hard to drink and wee as much as she can that should be enough to get them to go away although it will take longer.

Hey there.

I'm quite prone to UTI's too. It's quite stressing not to mention puts a downer on things. I will suggest a few things that help me to advoid them (others may/have already noted them);

-CRANBERRIES! Eat or drink cranberries. And not just when you're planning to have sexy fun times.

-Drink PLEANTY of water. This flushes out any nasty stuff in her body.

-Clean knickers, toys, penis, hands and etc. Bacteria can come from anywhere or anything, so this is a good routin to get into.

-LUBE. This COULD happen from not being completely wet in the lady privates. This doesn't nessecarily mean she's not horny though. :)

-Condoms. Condoms help in a way so that there isnt any friction going on in there. Especially if they are lubey ones. Not saying you have to use them everytime, but they can help now and again.

-Pee. Peeing before and after sexy fun times help in the same way that drinking pleanty of water does. It just flushes everything out. If peeing can't be done before, then DEFINATELY do it afterwards.

Thats all I can think of right now, but I hope it helps.

I can completely sympathise with you guys. xx

all of the above is good advice (particularly drinking lots & peeing before & after sex)

Just a quick reminder to wipe from front to back - simple advice but it surprised me recently to find out a friend of mine didn't know that back-to-front is... well, back-to-front. If you wipe from front to back it keeps the nastier bugs away from the urinary tract

katmiaow - we're talking about just one session here, that's all it takes really. We can have a 10-20 minute quickie and that'll be enough.

As for cleaning, peeing, water-drinking, lube and condoms, we're doing plenty of all of that. It's just about being strict about a routine every single time we do anything. But cheers for that.

It definitely does put a downer on things alright; I'm half inclined to blame myself, and think that its whatever way my anatomy is that's aggravating her each time. And I'll be afraid to be a bit rough with her, something which we both quite enjoy.

Our plan is to sit down and make out a list of positions that will minimise pressure on her bladder. If that involves avoiding positions that hit her g-spot. . . well that's quite a lot. But sure we'll have to try and make do.

Cheers for the responses and sympathies!

Have fun ;D

Hi,

I used to be a sufferer of severe uti's averaging about one every 6 weeks, one once so severe I had to be rushed to hospital. I was in so much pain and antibiotics didn't help, I was also prescribed a strong dose of dihydrocodeine for the severe pain, which just made me violently ill. In the end after much pestering of the gp, they just put it down to interstitial cystitis and after much time asking to be referred, I eventually had a cystocopy to find out more, which came back clear and nothing was wrong. So, no interstitial cystitis or any other bladder problems.

I had other problems too such as pelvic pain and pain during intercourse with heavy painful prolonged periods (which isn't related to the uti's but you will see why this is relevant).

I was referred to gynae clinic at the hospital for laparoscopic surgery to rule out endometriosis, which revealed I did in fact have it, and had some removed that was able to be removed safely. I have been reading more into it since and frequent uti's/interstitial cystitis can be symptoms and endo can be misdiagnosed by assuming these uti's are just 'normal' for 'you' and that you're more 'prone' to them when in fact there is more going on beneath the surface. I am not trying to alarm or scare you by saying this but I would definately get lots of other opinions and ask to be referred to find out more as regards to the uti's and/or endo if you have similar symptoms.

Please, please don't suffer, I did with mine for many many years, having being told I am just unfortunate to be 'prone' to them, and what with it affecting nearly all the women in my family, but researchers say there's no evidence to prove or suggest it is hereditary/genetic, I just assumed it was a massive coincindence. It took approx 3 years for the docs to reffer me for further tests to investigate it all, but I have been a sufferer along time before this but chose to wait it out as I was 'at that age' where women genuinely can be prone to uti's. In the end enough was enough and I had to get a solution or cure, or at least something to make it easier to live with and for a while the cranberry tablets helped massively and my attacks were less severe and further apart between attacks.

I really hope you can sort this out, I totally understand was you are going through right now.

((hugs))

ronnie-baby.

I forgot to mention, coincidentally all my so called uti/interstitial cystitis problems have remained non existent since my endo removal, which just goes to show that the research I read must have some grain of truth in it. I fit wasn't for the facr of my frequent urinary problems my endo would've gone undiagnosed and it would've probably soon affected my fertility as it was very close to approaching my fallopian tubes/ovaries. So after many years of requesting referral which should've been done in the blink of an eye, I was finally listened to and hopefully remain in good health now.

(Sorry just corrected the spelling/grammar mistakes.)

Thanks for sharing ronnie-baby, that's definitely a tough situation you got through.

As far as we both know, endometriosis has been ruled out for her after going for an ultrasound last year. On the other hand, I understand that it may still be a possibility if that wasn't exactly what they were looking for at the time.

For now I think we're just going to see how it goes; she's just recovering from the cystoscopy now, so it will be another while still before we chance sex again. So we'll just see how things go with that, after we've sorted out positions and everything. I think if we have another case of a UTI in the near future, that will be breaking point, so we'll definitely keep the possibility of endometriosis an open one for the future.

Thanks very much for sharing with us!

Hi s&s, you can only diagnose endo via laparoscopy or laparotomy, not through u/s scan. I have had all those too and thought it would show up by gynae says lap ops are the only way or truly diagnosing endo. An u/s scan thst I had a month ago compared to one I had oct last yr which showed up nothing that all was fine showed this time that I also now have adenomyosis which is endo in the womb. unfortunately another debilitating condition with no cure that is going to cause me unnecessary pain and suffering for life now.

I really hope you get it sorted, I can truly sympathise with how much pain, discomfort she is in and how frustrating it is. Please let me know how you both get on. email is on profile if you want to add it. I know how much it means to have support from those who have been in the same situation.

Ah ok, we're sorry to hear about your further troubles

For now, we're going to try and persist and see how things go. It'll be another week at least before we'll go back to having full sex, so we're just going to go for it and hope for the best. I think that if this happens again, we'll more or less be at breaking point, and will definitely consider looking into a laparoscopy if it seems necessary.

Thanks again for your responses, they've been very helpful! We'll definitely keep you posted with the situation.

Just as an update to this; we're working out way back towards our normal sex life at the moment. However, as she has basically been told to stay on antibiotics indefinitely, she's giving acupuncture a go, as it was recommended by a few people.

I myself see this as nothing more than witchcraft with needles, but hopefully I'll be proven wrong. It'll be interesting to see if this works out, and we'll keep things updated here, just out of interest.

Not sure if it has been mentioned but she needs to pee after sex. It's proven to reduce the occurrence of UTI's.

Mrs SXE was very prone to UTI's but after having it suggested that she pee's EVERYTIME after we have sex we haven't had a single problem. It took a while to get into the routine as its a bit of a mood killer but then again its significantly better than the alternative.

Now even if she gives me a BJ she goes for a pee after. Its engrained!

Hello, I know how you feel, I have had a couple of bad ones in the past year.

Just some background in case anyone isnt sure, an UTI is caused when some bacteria get into your uthera and travels up to your Urinary Tract Infections.

The act of completely emptying your bladder and not rushing things makes sure that there are minmial bacteria left. The best position is to sit straight and then push a little towards the end to make sure you get it all out. The other problem can be waiting too long to urinate, make sure that she drinks plenty of fluids and empties here bladder frequently. Ideally urine should be almost clear in colour, though in the mornings it is always darker. Waiting too long streches the bladder and your muscles, over time it weakens the bladder leading to it not completely empty and this may increase the risk of a UTI.

Sexual intercourse introduces bacteria as the penis like all body parts is not sterile, this can be helped by keeping good hygiene and before sex wiping over with wipes to get rid of any bacteria. The other problem is that during intercourse bacteria from the vaginal area is massaged into the uthera. The washing part goes for her too, wash before and after intercourse.

I am sure this does not need to be mentioned but always make sure you wipe front to back. After going to the toilet it is worth having a wash or giving yourself a quick wipe. This helps a lot when you are going in places like public toilets when people who are using the toilet paper have well touched it, you are then wiping yourself with paper they may have touched and that may have bacteria on it.

Scented sprays/soaps/wipes and douches can irritate the uthera leader to a higher risk of UTI. I have found since switching to a feminine ph balanced unscented wash that I have them much less frequently.

Drinking cranberry juice or taking cranberry tablets can decrease the likelyhood of getting a UTI and speed up recovery time. Drinking just two 4-ounce glasses can help a great deal.

Having showers instead of baths is better as she is less likely to have any bacteria travel into the uthera when she is showering rather than sitting in bath water.

Regularly taking vitamin C will help decrease the likelihood of UTIs as this increases the acidity level of your urine which helps decrease the number of bacteria that may be present.

Changing your position to one that creates less pressure is another idea, perhaps either from behind or her being on top may lessen the pressure.

Another tip is to wear knickers/panties with a cotton crotch, cotton lets moisture escape while other fabrics trap moisture which creates an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.

From your update, glad she is getting better. If she is prone to them after sex then some doctors suggest taking an antibiotic straight after to help mimise the risk of an UTI.

I hope these suggestions help.

Cheers for the well-wishes.

Yeah, we're aware of pretty much everything you posted MM; the antiobiotic that's taken straight after sex is one thing we haven't used, and would prefer not to frankly. But thanks for the suggestions, it's a very clear list of things to check off if others are having this problem.

One thing we are looking into is getting myself checked for high levels of latent ecoli bacteria, just in case I'm actually carrying it without being symptomatic, and we're just passing it back and forth whenever we have sex. I've to get onto my GP about that, as I'm not sure if simple blood and urine tests will show that up. But it's one other thing we're checking out.

As for her acupuncture; the guy's insistant that within eight sessions, she'll be completely healthy. I'm forever the sceptic with things like this, so we'll have to wait and see on that one. But if there are any miracle successes due to acupuncture, we'll be sure to post here and let people know.

So I figured I'd update this thread, rather than post a new one.

So more than six months on, and UTIs are still an issue. We had sex last week for the first time in over a month, and sure enough, another one came along. Now there were a number of factors that contributed to this (antibiotics, time of the month etc.,) but the fact of the matter is that she has still gotten another infection. In fact, it's now the thought in our heads every time we go to have sex: will she get an infection this time.

So, as medical science has failed; her doctor and subsequent specialists can only agree that she is prone to UTIs but cannot help in figuring out what to do, beyond prescribing a 3 month course of antibiotics, to be repeated indefinitely, as in, forever; we are now looking at some more options. Acupuncture appears to be the witchcraft I had originally insisted it was, as it did sweet fuck all, and we are unfortunately not the praying type.

However, after some more research, she has discovered some other options. The main one is a tonic of sorts called Cystex (found on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cystex-Liquid-Cranberry-Complex-7-6/dp/B004EBVEL0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1340039658&sr=8-3). There are plenty of testimonials which claim to solve the precise problems that we are having. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to sold outside of America, so getting it to Ireland is a tad expensive.

So we decided to post here and ask if anyone has had any experience with Cystex in the past, and in particular, if there is anywhere in the UK or Ireland where we could get our hands on it for cheaper than £30 for a month's supply, which is what Amazon is costing.
