Question for the ladies

I have been through a lot of stress since October, as some may know. I had suffered late period several times in the last 4-5 months (twice or 3 times, but usually up to a week only). Now I am almost 3 weeks late, been in pain for week and half. My gums are sore, like very sore, my skin is getting really bad and I really am scared of mirrors and my sex drive went out of the window, mainly because orgasm or any internal stimulation can cause painful menstruation cramps. Which can go on for few hours.

I am not pregnant, did not have sex for 9 months, so no, no chance there. So I assume this is stress. I did not loose or gain any weight (or within +-2kg, so nothing really drastic). I am doing the same amount of exercise, just added one hour of flamenco recently, but skipping one running a week, so its about the same as usual. So I guess stress is the factor here, or the main one.

Now the question. I am considering asking my gynecologist to give me something to start the period. I know, it can start tomorrow, 3 days, a week but also a month! I know that if my body is feeling too stress, it can hold it for long time, the longest was almost 4 months when I was about 19. And e.g. another months in pain, gum problems and skin problems and zero sex drive is not something I am willing to go through.

But I generally dont react too well to hormones, so I am not sure if I should risk it. Wondering what would be worse... Sudden hormonal injection to cause the period, or my hormones going crazy for long time with no effect what so ever?

What do you think, ladies?

I would just ask the gynae what they would suggest to be a better option to be on the safe side they would know best

If it were me, I would just go to my doctor explain all this to them and see what their opinion is. It's probably best, initially, to not go with treatment idea's. Just see what their suggestions are because there might be a simpler solution than what your thinking. They're professional people who can give you the best advice going. hope this helps :-)

I suffer from a hormone imbalance and have taken hormones in the past to try and fix it.

I had to wait at untill over six months of no periods before my doctor was willing to give me hormones, and these where in the form of a tablet known as Norethisterone. I took it for about two weeks, and I found I was only able to sleep two hours at most each night. It made me emotional too. After a week of not taking it, I did bleed, but it wasn't like my normal periods. Since then I've still had more problems and am going for further tests and only after then will things like ingections be considered.

Noramally most doctors will wait at least 4 months and often over 6 months before suggesting treatment, and sometimes they will give you tablets that act as a progestrone challenge. You can read a little here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progestin_challenge

Also, you'll probably have to go for blood tests first to check things like thyroids

I was also recommened to stop doing almost all exercise and that even walking for over 30 mins a time would put stress onto my body. However, before all this I was over exercising running over 100 miles a week, weights, yoga, hula hooping, and more. But everyone has different levels. I was also recommened to take multi vits as my body wasn't getting enough of them.

Anyway I'm going for a lot more tests soon.

Some doctors will recommend you to go onto something like the pill as this will make sure you have a period, and will help prevent stress on your bones. Also it means your eggs will be kept in better condition.

Taking Ganna Linolenic Acid might help - Evening Primrose oil or Starflower. Also Agnus Castus can sometimes help and is recommened by some doctors. Also sweet potato is meant to help a lot.

As you are only a few weeks late, I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of period as it is common to miss one or two during stressful times.

Sorry I can't be much help. It is stressful, but I really think you should wait a bit before considering hormones - they also have a lot of bad side effects. Just try and take things a bit easy for the next few weeks and make sure you are eating enough so your body can producing a lining in your womb.

The thing is I am getting cramps every day, sometimes strong, so I am considering painkillers - not good to take too often, so I suffer. Plus my skin in really really bad! And I mean I cannot look into the mirror and my skin is flaring, I can barely keep my cloths on at times, shaving is pain, as it flares it for 2 days. Itching constantly and I am even feeling my hands itching when typing this. And when you have bleeding gums - my gums can react like this to some hormonal changes... you just want this to be over.

I am not sure if I can go for long like this, yet alone up to half a year!

And the thing is... I am entering exam time, so I will suffer huge amount of stress and lack of sleep. Materials due for one exam this week, another in 2 weeks... There is no way I would not be stressed. And in this condition... the question is.. Will I be able to focus?

I am trying to eat lot of vegs and vegetables, I drink kefir or eat joghurts, but will try what you suggested. I never had sweet potatos. Any tip on how to propare them?

But thanks for the tips, Nymp.

And thanks for replies ladies

I agree it is horrid when your hormones are out of whack. I too have gone through similar things, I did get use to the itching, although it is annoying. I'm not trying to worry you even more, but I did experience hair loss too... Luckly I still have some, but every now and again I would lose massive clumps. That was the most upsetting part for me, well part from not having to shave my legs, that was ok.

Sweet potato, you can boil it, bake it, fry it, eat to skin or take it off, it's up to you. Similar to normal potato but cooks a lot quicker. However I learnt the other day that the Japanese also eat it raw grated on salad.

Also, you say you are having gum problems. Sometimes dental infections can be the cause of not ovulating and therefore sometimes leading to a missed period. But then again amenorrhea can cause weak teeth.

If you are that worried about it, I would suggest maybe going onto the pill. As this will also help clear your skin up. Although I don't normally get along with the pill, it's tempting just to stop all the nasty skin and hair loss etc, and actaully the pill is a lot nicer than taking other hormones. However it's not really an option for me right now due to how I want my life to go. As I would like children soonish and taking the pill would just slow this down a lot more.

But really it is probably best to visit your doctor.

I cannot take pill. I tried it and one reason why my skin is now itching was the pill. I always had sensitive skin and this started after it, plus I had joint problems, pressure issues, digestion issues and few other issues, really strong bad reaction and that was supposed to be one of the mildest available. I cannot take hormones. not long time.

I am used to skin itching, I have been living with it daily itching for erhm 4 or 5 years now, straight. But at times it goes so bad I cannot touch things, and I can barely keep cloths on, as its like cloths are rubbing it raw.

I do not have any dental infection. I have the gums issue about 5-6 times a year during menstruation, it can appear, stay for a day or 2 and then go normal. My dentist never found anything wrong with me and it even happened last month, and I had antibiotics a week before and wisdom tooth removed, so they would notice, as I spent lot of time with dentists then. And I been talking to my dentist many times and he thinks the cause is hormonal and not the other way round, my gums causing period issues.

Dont scare me with hair loss! I cannot even think about that. I like my hair and the thought of having to wear fake is not something I want to. Luckily I dont seem to be loosing any.

I guess I will try my doctor. With my luck, he will not have the time until mid June anyway. And my GP will not see me with menstruation problems, as this is fully sorted here by the gynecologist.

Well... Looks like my body decided to function. Only 3 weeks late. In huge pain now though and I can seriously feel pain on my left ovarium, but not like really huge pain and not constant. And considering my hormones are messed up right now I guess it can be normal.

Will have to see my doctor for the smear test in a month anyway, so I will ask him. I dont think its a cyst.

I'm glad your body has started working now, even if you are in pain =)

AA, in this country, it is not GP who sees you with feminine problems - or maybe only if you need strong painkillers, you have to see your gynecologist. And we do not have nurse who would see you, just doctors, for everything. And GP is for very basic illnesses or when you need to be send to a specialist and he needs recommendation from GP, if you have feminine problems, you have to see your gynecologists. You have established gynecologists with whom you book appointments, and with whom you have to meet annually for check. And he is prescribing contraception. You can come on emergency appointment, but as my pain is mild for that - painkillers still kick in, just took them about 2 hours to do it fully, but I have been like this for about 12 years now, and now I can function normally. he would not see me and have to get regular appointment.

The thing is, that this cirle was really really messed up, so this could be anything. Plus the pain on the ovarium seem to be now gone, unlike the pain in my abdomen, but thats something I suffer monthly. I usually am in strong pain during menstruation. And it does not occur every menstruation, but very rarely.

I have ultrasound scan annually, at least once a year, and no cyst was ever found. I had a friend who had cysts and know few other people. The pain was far far sharper, and much stronger. So strong, they needed injections to be able to deal with it. This is nowhere as strong.

Yeah, me too. Glad I have day off and not working though. I am not sure how I would deal with customers right now
