Toy maintenance advice

Evening all. I have had a search but couldn't find any particular threads that answered my conundrum. I am however sure some of you might have an answer or be able to offer a tidbit or two.

I've just had a toy box sort and horrified to see a few of my vibrators have melted little chunks and some have black marks on. These are the ones that haven't been used in a while - it also seems to be mainly on the jelly/rubbery ones.

Currently we have all the lubes and oils in a separate little box and we make sure to air dry toys after a good clean.

However (and dont shoot me as I realise the error of my ways now and am off to purchase some organza type bags) we have had all the other toys, vibes, bullets, dildos and rings etc all just laying together in the same box. We have a mix of silicone and jelly.

Do you think this could have caused the melting effect? Any other recommendations apart from the little bags? Anything else I really need to be doing?

I'm sure there are some great pearls of wisdom I am missing out on! Thanks everyone

Yup. Certain materials will react together and make dildo gumbo. 🙂

Here's the Lovehoney guide. 👍

And there's also this thread, which is a bit of a meandering conversation about regular toy checks and how to keep rechargeable toys tip top.

Jess told us the other day that silicone toys won't react with other silicone toys/bags as it's an inert material. So good quality silicone is fine to store together, but still don't use silicone lube with it without doing a patch test first. 🙂👍

Am frustrated with myself as I knew about some of this but it was a 'oh it will never happen to me type thing'. I just didn't think a silicone toy would react with other toys. I'm always super cautious about the lubes - hence why they are all in their own little box.

Also - Thanks Ian! I used your paragraph trick which you mentioned on another thread. As you can see my post is equipped with paragraphs and it makes me delightfully happy 😂🙈

Always glad to help. And on the brightside it's a great excuse to buy more toys. 🙂

I'm always on the lookout for tips and tricks, so hopefully this thread will encourage people to share a few more. Having a large and ever growing collection is a difficult beast to tame, and I'll take all the help I can get. 🙂

@Forever his: Easily done. I asked this question a while back and LH staff said it was ok to store silicone toys together but to keep others separate. The LH boxes are great for storage. I keep Mantirc toys in one, Desire in another and 50 Shades in a different one - they are all silicone and I just keep lube in the bathroom cabinet and on the bedside table. I've got plastic coated / gel toys too- not sure what to do with them so I keep them in the boxes they arrived in. I think glass and steel dildos are probably ok mixed around but maybe check? They usually come with a bag anyway. I hope you can salvage your best toys - lots of offers on at the mo if you need to replace any!

Hmm...I don't think I have any jelly/rubber toys but for the toys I don't have a satin bag for just go in plastic sandwich bags and I haven't had any issues with that so far. You just have to make sure your toy is completely dry before zipping it away.

I always stock up on the satin and bondage bags when they're on sale.

I'm currently using an IKEA remote holder (FLÖRT) tucked under my bed for my current faves. Easy access and keeps them separate.

I think the biggest rule is seperate your jelly/TPE toys from each other (different bags). Silicone can be stored together, make sure all toys are bone dry before being put into bags or into contact with each other. I am still learning though so could always use more tips and tricks.

That's a few other guides that may have a bit more info in:

If anyone can think of any others that'd be great. 👍 I think the guide section could probably do with a big clean up as it's a little sprawling. 🙂

Thanks for all the responses. Just to check, all jelly type toys should be stored separately? So not in one box together away from other material toys?

This is where I get a bit stuck too, I believe they have to be stored separately but I don't know if that's fact or not. I stocked up on LH bags when they are in the sale so we have one for each toy to be on the safe side.

I don't have much experience with jelly toys I only know what I read, and then we've stuck with silicone. I believe jelly/tpe toys will melt each other if they're stored touching, so separate bags for them. I remember seeing a sex blog where she popped all the jelly, etc dildos in a big jar and then watched them all melt together. 🙂 I can't remember which one it was now? Maybe Dangerous Lily? I'll dig it out.

That was easier than I thought. 🙂

Thanks folks! Although that means my rearranging last night was for naught and I'll need to do it again. Gah!

Whilst on a cleaning thread. I have a few bodystockings that I adore. I'm scared to put them in the washing machine. I think I read somewhere - it might have even been from you Mr Chimp - about washing them with baby shampoo? Or have I dreamt this up?

I hand-wash all of Mrs Chimp's lingerie. I know some people put them in a delicates bag and pop them on the hand-wash/gentle cycle in their machines, but I tried it once and it went a bit bobbly (though I used a bobble-off machine to tidy it up a bit, so it wasn't completely ruined). So, yeah, I use the 'baby shampoo and pat dry' technique from this guide 👍 -

I'm definitely sending OH to you for training!

I loved that Dangerous Lilly post. Melting toys! Freaky ![](upload://jokG3WtlbVccWAgGjeuPxY6tITM.gif)

Given your new dapper avatar, Ian Chimp, it sounds like Mrs Chimp could hire you out to earn your keep as a Jeeves type butler figure for the clueless among us!

I once put a bodystocking in the washing machine with a bra. That was a mistake.

Now I hand wash things in the bathroom sink with whatever gentle soap/cleanser comes to hand and dry them on the bedroom radiator. Even when the heating is off these items air-dry quite fast.
