generation sex

I was just posting on another thread and it got me thinking.....we have a fantasticly helpful community of all ages so maybe you can help me.

Im 23 and I talk freely with my friends and parents about sex and toys, but this used to be very taboo, is the world getting more open minded or are the younger generation........desensitized isn't quite the right word but I can't think of a better one right now. Are younger people more happy to talk about sex? Xx

It's simply because of the internet, anonimity give people the freedom to talk about their fetishs/sexual practices to other like minded people in basic online privacy until the are confident enough to talk openly in real life and because of chatroom/forums there is really nothing that you could be into that you wouldn't find at least one other person who is into it too.

I honestly think the freedom to talk about sex in some social circles has been unchanged, but the internet has been a massive help in making sex more discussable in the mainstream.

Online discussion, bloggers, forums such as this, porn sites even, newsgroups back in the 90s, they've all given people a vice to talk about sex and fantasy and slowly over the past few decades so much more has become common place outside of the internet.

Even if the internet wasn't available to use as a platform to communicate, it would have ended up the same way, if you look back from the 60s to the 80s attitudes had already changed a great deal from post war generations, but even then and before, some of the sexual ideas and urges we have now would have been around then, just not spoken of so freely.

Tv and the internet!
As a teenager I grew up watching sex and the city which was considered a big steping stone for women to openly discuss sex. Since then we are seeing more programmes which are pushing what is considered the "normal" and ok amount of sex to show on tv!
10 years ago you would hardly have even seen gay relationships on tv shows and now every soap opra ( eastenders, hollyoaks, formation street ) all have multiple same sex relationships.
Thanks to the internet we are able to discuss are fantasies, research how to do things etc so when we talk with friends we already know what we are doing is normal or not weird.

I agree , my worry is though that they are looking to much at the physical side of a relationship to much and using porn as sex education. Where something like this forum with real people in real relationships and real issues would be far better for of a healthy reference.

I noticed you posted in the 'speaking freely' thread, and although I'm only 3 years older than you, we don't carry the same opinion on the matter. I wouldn't say it was a generation thing, I would just say it's down to everyone being different. A lot if the older generation are more confident talking about sex, but a lot of them choose not to. Just like with the younger generation, I choose not to because I think it's a personal thing that doesn't need to be spoken about. Although, nowadays it always seems to be some sort of competition between young men and women about what they've done or how many people they've slept with. If anything, they'll probably grow out of it by their mid-30's, the older generation are probably just bored about talking about it. It's just sex, there's not much to talk about after you've already spoken to one person a few times about it.

To be honest, I think it depends completely on your family. No generation issues really?

I think it is becoming easier with each generation talking about sex and stuff, simply because quite a lot of younger people are becoming pregnant too, so we have to talk about it more but it does also depend on your friendship groups and family. I'm pretty open about things, I've even bought my mum a little bullet coz she was interested!! and my best mate for her birthday but then I have friends that are rather prudish and won't even talk about kissing but again thats the way they were brought up x

Done aloth of thinking when I read this thread and still don't have a great answer. Its a strange one. I'm 24 and have friends the same age and some older who won't speak about sex at all. Other friends will laugh and have a gab about certain things. I myself am open when it comes down to someone really needing advice ect but as for bragging I'm not into that, I've been with 2ppl in my life. My ex and my other half of 7 years so don't have 'bragging rights' as far as some ppl are concerned. However both my parents are prudes (for lack of a better word lol) yet I'm quite a sexual person, which I wasn't until I met my other half. Which is strange coz he didn't 'make' me this way as he's quite shy in the bedroom (well compared to me lol) I dunno its all very confusing. Why we are the way we are... Lol x

Speaking from an Irish prospective, I think the younger generation (how old do I sound) particularly young guys, are far more open when it comes to sex.

In Ireland the Catholic Church has in the last 20 years or so, become irrelevant to the majority of people and this had resulted in people becoming more open about sex and sexuality. Before that sex was considered sinfull and dirty. I've noticed a huge change in attitudes.

When i was younger it was never spoken about. Even when i started my period it was the most hardest thing to do telling my mum! I remember hesitating and pondering for hours before i told her.

Now its different, we chat openly about it and have laugh. I wish it was like that when i was younger. But i am open with my older boys (13 and 16) and they are open with me, i will always answer there questions about it. I dont want them growing up like i did embarrassed.
