Japanese School Girl Outfit?

Does anyone know where I can get one for less than £30?

I'm talking about the sailor style ones that the girls wear in Japan? Also if you're an anime fan like me, I mean style from Azumanga Daioh too.

It's for both fancy dress and for in the bedroom. I'm checking ebay and they don't look very good, but of course they always get updated.

Any help, please? =)

Here you go :

http://www.jlist.com/SHRT/COST_1.html (list of 4 pages, starting with mostly expensive items)

http://www.jlist.com/SEARCH/schoolgirl_costume (warning - some things in this search might not be to your tastes - you just can't narrow down very well with this site)

I've used Jlist before - the guy lives in Japan now and has a mailorder business - he's pretty good, and has a newsletter which can be pretty interesting (I've not unsubscribed yet!)

Anyway - 55$ (US) for a school girl outfit is just about less than 30 pounds, but they have a few different types (and the website is english) - the red one is UBER cute :o)

Hey Little Lady, I'm not sure about the pricing here, but I would have thought £30 might be a little difficult - quite a few cosplay stores that I've seen ship their stuff over from the US, so they seem rather ridiculously expensive.

I know what you mean though - the skirt could probably be bought at most places (my old school PE skirt was identical! = school stores? Better yet, charity shop hunting might be good, I'm always coming across pleated skirts), but the top might be slightly more difficult.

As it's not a hugely complex design, would you think of making one yourself (coming from a girl who can barely patch a pair of trousers up...)? If you got a cheap red long sleeved top (on the baggy side), the collar part would be rather easy to cut and sew on. The ribbon looks like the kind you get for ballet shoes, which can be bought in rolls (John Lewis I know have some, as do specialist dance shops, often a bit cheaper).

Oh, I clearly spoke too soon, sorry! $55 dollars IS rather good. I'm such a cheapskate though.

I found someone in the UK on ebay that was making them made to measure etc for around £20

I decided to make my own for the convention, seemed easier, plus was cheaper

Thanks for the replies all!

LadiesMan I'll have to check out those links! Thanks for putting those up for me,

mimiaow I know what you mean and yes I have been known to make stuff before so I could give that a whirl! ;)

Morbidia I'm going to have another mooch on Ebay now, any tips on how you're making your own? =)

Im literally making mine off the top of my head, did a bit of online research, the skirt was easy, folded loads of pleats, a one way pleat would have been quicker, but i did a box pleat cause i needed to. Sew a band and a zip on it (had to do the zip by hand)

And the fuku (sailor collar thing) is basically a rectangle with two parts that come down at the front that im attaching to a bought top, and im currently attempting to make a jacket, lol

Ooo thanks for the links and advice! =D Those look reallyt helpful!

That jlist website is very VERY cool! They sell Sanrio stuff too! I love Chococat. =P

I might start to make my own soonish, would be something to do in the day and something to wear when going back to uni for the Friday nights out. ;)

You be very welcome my dear, although i do wish to see pics once you've made it as payment, lol

And everyone loves this outfit, my OH finds it a very sexy look, and i do too actually, so tis all good :)

Im remaking me fuku at the moment :)

Oh of course you would! =D

You should post pictures of yours when it's done too! ;)

Yeah I think it's a very sweet yet sexy outfit but I'd use it for many things like dressing up at Halloween etc. =P

What colour(s) are you doing yours?

*Drools*

im doing a blue/white one :)

Just finished my fuku, was uber easy, and im so SO happy with it ^_^

And i shall post pics when the jackets done too (providing i dont screw it up and abandon the idea, lol)

YAYS! POST POST POST!!!

I did the paper design that the woman showed in the Youtube video and it's gone kinnnda well. I've written down the materials I'll need to make my fuku and I'll probably get a cheap wig off of ebay like Sakaki from Auzumanga Daioh.

But I've just done some sketches of what my fuku is going to look like. Hopefully I'll go well! =P

well, my first one i did off the top of my head, the second one, my mum advise, basically, you say the shape right?? The rectangle with long bits to go down the front? Cut two out, sew a hem, leave a hole, and turn it inside out and you'll have an amazing fuku, with only one lil seam (where you sewed up the hole)

I wouldnt buy cosplays from eBay, they're nearly always terrible, overpriced and you rarely get what's in the picture.

Looking around the internet, it's unlikely you'll get a nice one for less than £30. Your best bet may be to buy the skirt from somewhere like eBay, then commission the shirt if you cant find one made for the right price. If you go to the marketplace section of cosplay.com, there's a load of people there who'll make cosplay items to your measurements.

Having said that though, I can't imagine fukus can be that hard to make, as long as you research what you're doing first (and learn to hem!). The skirt isnt worth making, you can buy it for cheaper. Plus, I made a pleated skirt once and it was absolute hell! I had to make it because of the design (Ema Skye from Phoenix Wright), in fact I made two, and I swore afterwards I was never going to pleat anything ever again!

Wow, had no idea there were so many cosplayers on here!

Yesh the guide you linked me to was extemely helpful! I'll probably get my Mom to give me a hand, especially when it comes to measuring etc. Also did you use a sewing machine or a needle? I doubt my Mom will let me borrow her sewing machine so I'm going to do it by needle. ;)

Not sure what to do about the skirt! What did you do?

My fuku is going to be white, blue and red! =D

Ecksvie, i made my skirt for about £3, lol

I used a sewing machine, tis neater than my hand stitch, lol. Surely if she shows you how to use it she'd let you?

Oooh, white blue and red sounds good :)

Yeah true point. lf I explain what I intend to do she might let me use it. =P

Yeah I love those colours! =D

How much has your outfit cost to create so far? =)

cost £6 for all the material, even though i only really needed about 4, and my OH got me the wig, and as it was a good one that was £15. So pretty cheap! And it means i can make it exactly how i want it, and i can tell everyone that im clever and i made it, lol

If you want any help, you can email me, my address is on my page x x x
