London Riots

Yep. after hearing this I feel like getting a glass of whiskey and I dont normally drink it. But this is just madness.

MTC, it is unfortunately indicitive of this "me generation", they think the world owes them a living, yet are unwilling to contribute usefully to society in any way.I have to say, as a parent of two teenage kids, I do think a certain amount of culpability lays firmly at the feet of the parents, if i didn´t know where my kids were while all this is kicking off I would have a very uneasy feeling. The irony of the whole situation is lost on these kids as they stand there with their iphones and Blackberrys , bemoaning the fact that the reason they are doing this is as they have no money. Get a fuckin grip, you have food in your bellies, clothes on your back and a roof over your head what the fuck do you understand of poverty.

This is greed and avarice at it´s worst, opportunism and has overshadowed the shooting of a man that was the catalyst that started this.

Divine local Police wont say if this is related but the down here the troublemakers dont seem very bright

It's all kicking off in Manchester now too, shops in Market street trashed and alight....

It just makes me so angry that people can behave in this way, the disrespectful, moronic, cowardly little bastards....

This woman makes me very angry,

"Kids Company founder Camilla Batmanghelidjh has told Radio 5 live that the people rioting are the "ignored underclass" and that this is them "taking revenge''.

Speaking to Richard Bacon, she said a "greedy, material society" was to blame for the looting."

My Ass!!

Disclaimer - I absolutely understand that this *isn't* how you intended your comment but I'm just using the word used to make a point I think is important to remember so I'm not challenging or disagreeing with you at all!

But the use of the word "generation" is something I think would best be avoided in this case. It's not a whole generation who are behaving this way. It is a minority of individuals (but your point on those thinking they're entitled to certain things is certainly a valid one) who are behaving in a way that the majority of young people don't condone. I don't think it's useful to tar a whole generation with the same brush (which again, I know you weren't doing MB - but many people are).

There are many, many young people and children involved in the cleanup too - many school age kids in Liverpool, many students!

It's like in school - when the naughty kids get all the attention, when those behaving appropriately are forgotton about. The good kids aren't asking for attention, but please don't forget us, we're not all a bad bunch!

BashfulBabe I think your post (as always - you should be a writer) is both insightful and eloquent! Thank you for your contribution.

The response of the government over the next few days is crucial - on the one hand, these people should be condemned and are not behaving in an appropriate way. They are acting like petulent brats and were looking for an excuse to riot. But on the other hand - you have to ask why they think this is an acceptable response, why these people don't work, why they take advantage of benefits etc. The government cannot bury their heads in the sand and say "oh, you kids tut tut - nothing we can do about kids acting up" they need to take this as a message that something is going badly wrong in the way our "underclasses" are supported and something needs to change. And yes, that will probably cost some money - but we've taken all funding out of communities - now we need to realise we'd save more in the long run, by spending *smartly*.

One of mates just posted this on FB, just about sums it up....

"Only in the UK could rioters in £100 trainers organising things on their £300 Smart-phones claim to be in poverty (Anon)"

Liverpool is on a proper lockdown, everywhere is closed.

I live near kensington/Fairfield area in liverpool and have just travelled from the Old Swan area and everything is closed and can't see anything happening.

i feel for the family of the boy that got shot, they must feel enough grief as it is with out feeling their son is the catalyst for all this.......

I'm getting the train back to Liverpool tomorrow night. I hope it's not kicking off then because we arrive in quite late!

take care of yourself Alicia. Its scary whats doing on.

I'm yet to see a convincing arguement as to why not just hitting them hard and crushing this pronto with very bit of force the police and/or army can chuck at them.

There is so much wishy washy rhetoric from politicians about them feeling the full force of the law etc etc but here's what will really happen. The courts will judge the majority of them to young and at very best they'll get a community order for oh 2 weeks. The ones who are older will get a sentence , probably pathetically short and it'll take so bloody long to get to court that they'll be judged to have served 80% of it already and then they'll get out on good behaviour.

Of course the media pathetically attention span ( Japanese Earthquake anyone... the silence is deafening ) will totally forget to let us know what 'justice' these people actually recieved.

Personally I think the first punishment all of them should recieve is sterilisation.

Rant ends

The thing is (as a bloke being filmed on the telly pointed out yesterday) Once a fortnight there is a big football match in Tottenham, thousands of police are lining the streets and escorting the fans, yet when this all happens not a police officer is to be found!

The England v Holland friendly has been called off tomorrow, incase any football fans were wondering.

AA that is true myself being a THFC supporter I should know, and on Saturday we actually had our last pre-season friendly kick-off at 5:15 match ended at around 7 so idk what the police decided to do instead of stick around after the match?

Parts of Wavertree, Liverpool closed off tonight. Rioters targeting the Asda which is quite close to my home. Travelling back tomorrow night - hope it's quietened down by then.

i feel sorry for those that are in the areas with this, i feel its such a joke that this is happened, i bet over half have no idea why this even started, they dont have any idea about what they are doing to peoples lives. or have any real target, sweet shops / baby shops / hairdressers, there is no brains to this madness, i personally think this has gone on way too long and that the police should be able to do what ever it takes to stop it.

i heard the punishment for this is going to be 'fines' and that most of them wont be able to afford it. thats just pointless.

hope everyone is safe...

also, david cameron cut his holiday short, but not really sure what he can do to help tbh,

there was also a chav on the news saying 'this is because we dont get respect' ...

this stuff just makes me angry :)

There are rumours of explosions at Tottenham. I pray its not true... Let it not be true, please

0131:

There have been reports of a series of loud explosions at a diesel depot near Tottenham High Road, in North London. The fire, police and ambulance services are all at the scene, between Ashley Road and Park View Road.

Alicia, I don't know where in Liverpool you are, but apparently there have been reports of damage to Asda, though police say they can't yet say how much. Clean up starts at 9am outside tomorrow... I'm at the other end of Smithdown (opposite where they've demolished several streets) and we've had it bad tonight - petrol bombs, cars burning, police horses charging, hot and cold runnint riot police: but the good news (kind of) is that people in the city are generally very, very angry with the rioters - so it might die down by the time you're back.

Hoping all of your are safe and this madness ends soon
