I could be wrong but it sounds a little like your mystery battery leak could be a chemical reaction from storing your toys together rather than in separate bags. Some of the materials they're made of don't play well together and you can get a filmy, oily residue if they're left in contact with each other which might look like a leaky battery. Could be that or it could be from leaving batteries in toys. I’ve had a few batteries leak inside my plastic toys after they’ve been left in there for a few weeks at a time, this is why it’s often advised to remove them between uses, especially if there might be a few weeks or longer between its next outing.
It can be frustrating in the moment but it’s worth it to keep them in good condition I think 👍🏼
