Often sold at sports shops / physio therapy shops, usually around 3ft wide and mabbe 8-10 inch in diamater, they are a solid foam sphere, used for massaging away aches and pains. They can be really good for getting out knots in muscles (calf, quad, hamstring, lower back, shoulders), generally they use your bodyweight to get into them.

Youtube has a lot of vids on the more traditional uses of them.
