i have recently been talking to my boyfriends about experimenting with bondage but i have no idea what to use if there a specific thing i should try, whats safe and whats not etc

If you're just starting out with bondage I think a good starting point would be some cuffs (cuffs with velcro fastenings are strong and secure, but are quick and easy to get out of if things don't feel right or whatever.)
Also a simple blindfold can add a new dimention to playtime, it can be very arousing not knowing where the next kiss or teasing stroke is coming from!

Cuffs/restraints and a blindfold are normally a good place to start. Once you've tried that I find it usually becomes obvious what you want to try and when as you learn more about what you like and dislike.

I actually started off with rope because I won some in a competition, and while it was good, I wouldnt particularly recommend rope for a newbie. You do have to be careful with ropes to make sure you're not cutting off any blood supplies and things like that, and it also takes longer to get out of, which isn't good for a newbie who might not be sure they're gonna like it or not. I'd recommend starting off with some soft cuffs to begin with, especially velcro ones. You dont have to worry about hurting yourself and they're incredibly quick to get out of if need be.
