implant

Hi ive got the implant anyways its been a pain so I had to go on the pill to control the bleeding pattern. Anyways my three years is almost up so im gunna have to book the appointment for its removal, can anyone tell me what I have to expects as regards to do I come off all ccontraception for a while or continue to take the pill as there is no way im gunna be having another fitted x

I was on the implant with the pill alongside ti stop the bleeding it caused. They removed the implant and told me to carry on taking that pill :)

Well you have to wait about a week I think for it to start working, I don't think you can use other contraceptives with it but maybe ask the nurse when you're getting it fitted? I had mine fitted and she told me that if I'm going to have sex, use condoms because it won't be working straight away

Thanks for replys, im sure they will tell me if I have to come off the pill for a while to let my body recalculate itself, having said that I might give myself a break as ive not got a partner atm ... im really scared to have it removed x

Aww don't worry hun, it's fine. Honestly. :)

I was also on oral contraceptves to counteract the bleeding, I was taking 3 mini-pills a day at one point :S Not good, my head was all over the place! I had my imlant replaced by the Mirena coil, and I had the coil placed first, then I had to wait 2 weeks before getting my implant out. I do believe, but don't count me on this, that hormone contraceptives need 2 weeks in your system before you can have the implant removed, and I think that the copper coil can be implanted same day as the implant removal as it's a spermicide, and I think the same rule of thumb applies to the diaphragm.

The implant should be located just under your skin and you should be able to feel it - if so, the implant can be removed with a tiny incision (barely bigger than the scar you may have on insertion) and it is removed under local anaesthetic. This should take around 10/15 minutes. If you have a deep implant, like I did, you may be referred to a deep implant removal clinic, where they can find the implant with an ultrasound before removing it. Once the implant is located, this often takes somewhere between 10 and 30 minutes  to remove it (still under local anaesthetic). Mine was a partiularly difficult case, as I had never once been able to feel mine, and when they removed it they found that it had been implanted deep inside my bicep muscle tissue, and I had to have two attempted removals, both lasting over an hour long. (Chances of this are very unlikely by the way, something like 1 in 100 have a deep implant and my deep implant clinic had never seen an implant inside bicep tissue, and neither had the specialist from London who was called in to make the final removal.) Got a sizeable scar because of it, but I'm happy on the Mirena now and glad I had the implant removed!

i have had the implant in a year now and piled on weight also stops my bleeding yet i have spotting

I have a family planning nurse calling me today some time,im limited to the options I can have so i think ill continue with the pill im on x

think you'll just keep taking the pill, its a contraeptive in its own right so will just carry on doing its job. if you're not in a reltionship though Id just stop taking it to give your body a break.

Im going to start another thread as I've just found some serious ifo (i wish I'd had whe i got my implant in) that you might be interested in http://www.drugs.com/cons/implanon.html

sorry ffor the typos x

Thanks y&f I thinks its fair for my body to have a rest first, half the stuff ive read online I should of been told, my gp was angy when I first went to see her that the nurse who fitted mine hadnt explained the possibility of recurring bleeding. There was a lot I should of been told and prehaps would of made me look at other options x

it seems they've managed to get out of telling us loads of stuff (like depression and constant bleeding) by claining it doesnt need medical attention, that website has a list of side effects as long as my arm!

Its horrible im absolutely pooing myself about having it removed x

it'll be fine, its a tiny cut and they just push it out, should hurt a little more tha when you had it in but not by a great deal. can you feel it and if you can does it feel like its in one piece?

I agree it does have a creepy and off-putting, awfully long list - but the trouble is that these days each and every medication (I always read info leaflets about every pill or ointment I use at one time or another) comes with a long list of possible side effects, ranging from death through depression all the way to slight nosebleed or belching... Tough choice - use the stuff or avoid it like plague?

Appointment booked for the removal, so hopefully it goes well and will be over in mins x

Personally I don't think you can beat the merina coil

Im on the injection which is the same at the Implant but lasts 3 months.. i've had no issues on it...

with the pill...this will sound silly but basically I started feeling it in my throat all the time, as if i hadnt swallowed it properly so id take it hiden in food (like you would to an animal) and it was just awful haha, not sure if anyone else has had this? maybe only me lol.

hope this helps.x

the biologist in me just wanted to say that it was probably leaving a residue where it touched your throat and the hormone and other bits an bobs in the pill are either having an action on some sensory pathway there or iliciting a imune response, or the residue just could take a while to move on

The thing with lists of side effects is that they have to put *every* possibility on, even if theu're very unlikely, just to cover their own backs.

A lot of it can be disregarded, although the most common effects of the implant are pretty serious in themselves.
But, other methods of persistent contraception have similar lists....

I guess you just have to weigh up your priorities.
For me, I may lose weight and get less depressed if I got my implant out, but before I got it I was neurotic about accidentally getting pregnant even though I was on the pill.
